Heat Stroke is Something We All Need to Avoid and Prevent

As many already are cognizant of Katy TX and Houston area and for that matter the whole State of Texas is in the throes of a terrible heat wave. Due to this extreme heat, threat of suffering from Heat Stroke is a real and an ominous one.  Sun Stroke is another name for Heat Stroke. Heat Stroke is considered a Medical Emergency. Beware this can easily happen to you or someone else such as a family member, friend, neighbor or unsuspecting senior citizen.

One of the main characterizations of Heat Stroke is much higher than normal body temperature plus lack of hydration. Some of the other signs of Heat stroke are:

  • Killer headache

  • Light-headedness or dizziness

  • Red, very hot and dry skin

  • Muscle weakness or severe muscle cramps

  • Lack of normal sweating

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Either strong or light rapid heart beat

  • Seizures

  • Unconsciousness

This affliction occurs when someone is actively engaged in outdoor activities on a hot and humid day. Something as simple as working in your garden or cutting the grass could bring on a bout of heat stroke. The elderly tend to have more issues with developing Heat Stroke than other age groups but it can strike people of any age.

There are some things one can do to prevent Heat Stroke from occurring. One key preventive measure is to avoid outdoor physical activity during the heat of any given day which most of the time falls between 2 PM to 5 PM. I have seen examples recently when here in Katy it was still blazing hot and humid after 6 PM. If you do go outdoors wear appropriate clothes such as light, non dark colors and loose fitting clothing. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Completely avoid drinking any type of alcoholic beverage or caffeine containing liquid .

If you happen upon someone who appears to be suffering from Heat Stroke take them to a cooler place out of the sun and dab lukewarm water on their skin in several different spots on their body. Fan them with an over head fan or a hand fan and even call 911 for assistance if needed.  Give them fluids and elevate their feet.

Check on Senior Citizens during the day to make sure they are OK as many do not have or cannot afford to pay for cooling AC.  Even go to their home and bring them to a cooler area if they do not have AC or have AC which is not working properly.

Heat Stroke can have devastating negative impact on someone who ends up with this condition and can lead to permanent disabilities or even death. Heat stroke can occur in dogs and cats and other animals. I once had a long haired German Shepherd who ended up with Heat stroke by just harmless play and she almost died.

Do not ever leave a child, elderly person, pet or anyone in an automobile with this type of weather as they could easily die or end up with permanent brain damage. Unfortunately this situation happens way too many times during any summer season.

Bob Crane I've always prided myself on the way I handle heat and have said many times I'd like to live in Death Valley... no longer... something about getting to the age I'm at makes me appreciate AC.
