I am not afraid of snakes but I am afraid of being bitten by one..poisonous or not !
This is a great photo put out on FB today by the Wilson County Sheriffs Office.
Within the black outline is a Copperhead.
This is easily something any of us could step on before realizing what happened ... Can you see it ???
I am sharing this because in Eastern NC we are beginning to drop foliage as our summer is ending and our temps are dropping. ( Well, at least into the 80's for now ) This is a time where snakes are more mobile looking for food in the late afternoons..typically when people like me are out walking their pets or children are out playing after school.
Be sure to show this to your kids and remember to wear shoes and to be aware of your surroundings when walking through fallen leaves, rocky terrain or places where they can nest or hide from the sun like planters and play sets.
In North Carolina we tend to be most concerned about the copperhead because they are the most prevalent. They are not the most venomous in NC but will need medical treatment. Kids and pets can easily find themselves in a dangerous situation when exploring. This time of year they are reproducing .Copperheads can give birth to 3-14 young in the late summer/Fall. Oh .. my .. gosh !
If a bite occurs call 911 or rush your pet to the closest animal hospital.
Pitt County : Hospital or 911
