Remember Casey Kasem, geez who named that guy, and his Top 40 list? When I was a kid, I would take the bus from south Minneapolis to downtown, 7th and Nicollet, and go to Dayton's to buy the top 45 record of the week. I would also peruse the top 40 songs and pick up the list, which I could then check off as I listened to every top 40 song on my tiny AM transistor radio. To be on that Top 40 list was an achievement, and to own a record on that list was magical. I took my transistor radio with me everywhere and each week I looked forward to the Casey Kasem Top 40 countdown.
Downloading a song from iTunes just isn't the same thing. Although times change, the top 40 lists continue. For example, you might have caught the Top 40 list of Sacramento Realtors in Shallit's column yesterday in the Sacramento Bee and thought what the heck is this?
