Somehow, the DIY guys miss the part of the instructions where it says "why" things should be done in a certain manner.
The one who did that was probably proud of his (or her) work.

I don't get that journey from point A to point B at all. Way too many twists and turns!
There doesn't seem much point to this except to "rest" the pipe on top of the water heater. Never seen anything like this. You find the most interesting "fixes".
That looks like job for the new poly tubing. Tough to make water flow uphill
