Banastre
Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.
Banastre was born on August 21st, 1754 in England. His father John was Mayor of Liverpool. He attended Oxford University and was studying law as his intent was to become a lawyer. His father died in 1773 and he inherited 5,000.00. at that time 5,000.00 was a substantial amount of money. He soon squandered it away on women and gambling. He took the remainder of the money and bought a commission in the British cavalry. He was a gifted horseman and by all accounts an excellent leader of his troops. He quickly rose in the ranks. When the American Revolution broke out he was shipped to the New World where he was involved in several battles. His involvement in the Battle of Waxhaw Creek in current Virginia will forever have his name engrained in American history. During that battle the American’s led by Abraham Buford raised the white flag. Banastre ignored the flag and slaughtered the combatants. You may know him as Banastre Tarleton. The outcome of that battle became known as “Buford’s Massacre” or “Tarleton’s Quarter”. While he was one of the most hated man in the America’s he returned to England in 1781 where he was elected to the House of Commons and remained there until 1812.
