Ask an Ambassador - Do Points Really Matter?

Activerain BlogIf you have been around ActiveRain for any amount of time you have read  conversations about the points. Chances are when you signed up for the Rain you didn't know that there were points then as you started engaging you saw your points total begin to increase. Just by logging on each day and making comments on other people's blogs you are awarded points. So does it really matter? If you are a competitive person the answer would be yes. It is fun to see the numbers rise and congratulate other members when they reach important point milestones.

What types of activities give you points?
Almost everything you do in the network has a point value attributed to it. Logging on and posting blogs, commenting, asking and answering questions, reblogging, entering contests, having your blogs liked and bookmarked by others, reblogging other's posts,  participating in contests all make the numbers rise. There are many other activities that will yield you a few points here and there.

Another reason to care about points is your ranking in your city, county, state and the overall network. The higher your points go, the higher you rise on the leaderboard in your area and in the network. This can be very valuable if another agent or a consumer is searching for a real estate professional and your name rises to the top. It is a way to get noticed and have you selected to get referral business.

Do points really matter? They are a measurement of activity and involvement. They matter to many members but don't stress about them. They will come. Blogging should be enjoyable and not just about mounting up points. If getting points is your only goal then you are missing the real value of ActiveRain. What you gain in knowledge, building relationships, networking, marketing ideas and business building is priceless and no amount of points can equate to that.

Hi Debbie - I freely admit it - I love points ---

Some of the comments left that particularly resonated with me:  Carol WilliamsBarbara Todaro and Joanna Cohlan

And no post about points accumulation would be complete without Roger D. Mucci and that damn washer-dryer combination and that trip to Tahiti.

I guess I'm in the minority Debbie. Points may measure activity and involvement, but I must tell you - I don't really care about them...

I've always maintained that the point system is brilliant. At 500K, they really do matter, financially.

Hi Debbie Reynolds ,  I couldn't have said it any better.  Points are great for those of us that are competitive, but the educational value overshadows the points.

Sorry I couldn't like your blog.  I tried and tried, but it just wouldn't let me like it, so I will tell you verbally.  "I like your Blog".  I can't even like comments and worse yet, I have to leave active rain completely, before I can even return to my home page.  It's been like that for about a week.  I reported it, but haven't heard anything yet.  Maybe as an Ambassador, you can get the message to them.

Debbie - that is a good explanation of points and the leader board.  It is a measure of engagement.

Hi Debbie...Points are one of the things that matter (somewhat) but there is so many other things that matter much more. You mentioned them so I will not but hopefully newer members take note of those you listed. Not just for the sake of the points but for the participation in Active Rain. That's the most important part of belonging.

Good Saturday morning Debbie. Some folks say that points don't matter. They're lying through their teeth. They do matter. Why would they have them if it didn't?

Debbie, this is so true.  If you are on here just to "rack up your points" you are most definitely missing a lot of value in the rain.  You can always tell when that is the case-- "Good luck", "Great post" etc.  There are a lot of wonderful folks here on Activerain that have value way beyond the points! Have a fabulous weekend, Debbie!

Now, if I could only sell some of my points.  Then there would be some additional value!

I was one of those who were "grandfathered in." Being #1 in Yavapai County and holding onto that position is important to me. I used to track the number of profile views until it disappeared from my stats.

When I was younger they provided more of a motivator.  I was not having a lot of success, but points and rankings always gave me a goal.

Debbie, last year I went on a family vacation to Colorado. At that point, I was still trying to blog daily and make my 20 comments. My family was so upset with me. They couldn't believe that I was so obsessed with daily blogging. The truth is, I wanted to maintain my daily quota for points. My attitude has changed. While I've always blogged to get business, I no longer blog for points. Just today, I was contacted by buyers moving to my area. They found me through AR. That's the only reason I blog now.

I do care about  my points any more and there have been times when I realized I did not receive points for a post . However I try to post 10 posts a week.

Debbie, clearly, points do matter to some of us.  But what should really matter is that we blog in a way that helps our business instead of becoming a distraction from it.  You can buy shoes with commission checks, but our local Jimmy Choo store won't take ActiveRain points!  And yes, I bring my laptop to Paris and post and comment from there!

Yes, Debbie. My hunger for points put me on top in my city and community, and I have learned to blog for business to keep those phone lines ringing.

Hi Debbie Reynolds

I think points are not important in the long run BUT let that go...Points offer an incentive to participate in teh AR Experience.
