Do You Have A church Key?

A church key is a kind of bottle or can opener initially referred to as a small metal device for prying the caps off glass bottles.

churchKEY

In 1935, cans of beer with flat tops needed this device to puncture the lids.

One end is for bottles and the other for cans.

Even though D.F. Sampson invented this item in 1898, it was not called a church key until the 1950s.

While celebrating the 40th anniversary with some very special friends and former clients, I remembered the church keys in their previous house in Baltimore's Hunting Ridge.

I  am still fascinated by their extensive collection.

Today I saw these church keys all hanging together in the kitchen of their new home.

Just wondering...

Margaret- I must have at least 4! What's funny is that neither one of us drinks beer.  And, I had not heard it called that in years!

Margaret - yes indeed I do.  I am sure I have a real collection if I looked.  We still need them for imported beer.

I do and I keep it in the kitchen window sill over the sink. It belonged to my grandmother. I thought of her today when I used it to pry the lid off a jar of candied jalapenos I opened with the bottle opener side. I put candied jalapenos on top of deviled eggs for 5th Sunday fellowship lunch tomorrow.

I remember people calling a can opener a "Church Key" Margaret. Kids now would have no idea.

I do, but bottles seem to be coming twist top. I still need one to open chicken broth when cooking. I.m sure soon that will be pop top.

I don't know if I have one or not, but I have seen them.  Why are they called church keys though?  Beer isn't consumed in church, is it?

Robert (Alaska Bob) Swetz Maybe my friend has some of your discards on her wall.

Brian England And maybe It was because the earlier ones looked like the big church keys. Good question.

What a wonderful collection!

And yes, I do have one. My husband keeps it on top of the refrigerator to open his cans of tomato juice. I steal it to use when the lid does't want to come loose on home-canned fruits and veggies.

We also have one mounted on the wall out in the shop, just in case someone wants to open a "real" bottle. My neighbor uses it for his beer. He said that when his wife died much too young he decided that he would no longer live life on the cheap, saving for tomorrow. So now he refuses to drink anything with a twist-top.

Margaret - I only can things I can't buy in the store - like dilly beans, pickled beets, and peaches that taste far better than any I can purchase. One year I canned a whole lot of carrots and I do tomatoes when I have a good crop. That hasn't happened lately, however.

Dilly beans are just garlic dill pickles - but made with green beans.
