Dust is a fire hazard! Check Your Home!

Dust is the silent hazard to the home and its everywhere. Dust sits on furniture, in the vents, in the door tracks and window sills, and even behind your appliances. This can create a fire hazard easily if not cleaned regularly. Here are some areas to check around your home before fall!

1. Refrigerator, Oven, and Dishwasher. All of these appliances have electrical components hidden behind them and backed up against a wall. If for any reason there was to be a short or hot grease got behind there you could have a fire on your hands. Every few months pull your appliances out and clean them to remove excess dust and debris. This will also keep the parts from over heating.

2. Washer/Dryer & Bathroom Vents. These collect dust very quickly after cleaning. If not regularly cleared of dust, the heat produced by your dryer can cause it to catch fire. Your vent to the outside of the home can get clogged too. Have that cleaned once a year to ensure proper dispersment of air. Clear bathroom vents to allow moisture to escape and reduce mold and meldew.

3. Vaccum and Wipe surfaces regularly. This will help your allergies and reduce the amount of dust floating around in the air. I also recommend getting an air purifier for your home. It will remove dust and smells you dont want!

Judi K Barrett - Thank you Judi! I've heard horror stories of dryer lint catching fire because lint traps were clogged or the piping leading outside the house was not cleaned for years.

That's some good information Chris Mamone.  I'm not sure I want to say how long it's been since the appliances have been moved away from the wall, but it's probably fairly close to the time of installation.
