Monkeys to the left of me, monkeys to the right of me.....Not My Monkeys, Not My Circus!

When  you work with clients for months and months, it's easy to get invested in taking care of them.  You want them to be happy, both from a personal AND business standpoint.  When they're either out of (our sellers) or in (our buyers) a home, having them satisfied that we provided great customer service along the way is crucial.

But ultimately, it's critical that we also maintain a professional balance.  I'll kid with my clients that "It's easy for me to spend YOUR money", and it's both a joke and serious at the same time.  Because it's NOT my money they're spending, there has to be a certain caution in making recommendations (whether to replace the carpet before going on the market, whether spending an extra $10k for a home is worth it, etc.).

Don't get me wrong, I'll go to some pretty serious lengths to take care of my clients, but there's a border that I shouldn't cross.  When the emotion overruns good judgment, that line has been crossed.

And while I don't encounter it often, there are times I know the agent on the other side of the table has lost that arm's length distance.  They've made the deal their monkeys and their circus.  The terms of the negotiations get personalized, words like "insulting" & "ridiculous" start being tossed around (and sometimes a bit worse).

Now it's not my nature to get too riled up by such tactics (reason 101 to hire an engineer/real estate agent to take care of your real estate needs).  I learned a long time ago (thanks Navy training) that yelling and screaming at someone isn't a very effective way of "negotiating".

It's my job to stay calm and provide my clients the best possible advice (sometimes with a bit of OMMPH to get the message across) and to keep any angst from our side being communicated to the other side.  If we succeed in that, the likelihood of completing a sale and having a happy client climb significantly.

So while I enjoy watching the occasional circus act, I can't say I'm much interested in being part of one :)
