Time . . . and Money – Monday Morning Coffee

Both Time and Money are valuable!

Both Time and Money are available.

Both Time and money are scarce although the more philosophical amongst us might argue that time is infinite.

This human experience we share is often defined by how we “manage” ourselves with respect to time and money.

The cliche “We all have the same 24 hours available in every day, the same number of days in every week, month, and year” is true.

Our challenge then is finding that perfect blend of optimizing our time and procuring sufficient money to live a life of fulfillment such when we come to the end, we will be satisfied that we did our best with what we had.

Some folks seem to have Herculean skills as they achieve A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. levels of success seemingly with ease at very young ages while the rest of “us” toil and sweat “in the trenches.”

How do “they” do “THAT” and what can WE do to have our own slice of that pie?

I believe it comes down to personal choices we make along the way relative to our FOCUS, our attitude, and our commitment to continuous improvement.

If you don’t believe me, just ask any coach what it takes to build a winning team . . . I’m betting you’ll hear: “FOCUS – ATTITUDE – COMMITMENT” and “TEAMWORK”

So . . . as we continue to “peel this onion,” the first and MOST important component is where to FOCUS.

For this thing to work, FOCUS must be in alignment with PASSION.

When your FOCUS is on something of great IMPORTANCE to you, I might say that you’re not simply living . . . you’re following your heart.

When you are truly following your heart, some wonderful things just seem to happen:

  1. Whoever Comes is the right people – The right people seem to show up at the all the right times.
  2. Whenever it starts is the right time – This requires patience and diligence and a strong belief in self.
  3. Whatever Happens is the only thing that could have – Given “Right People” and “Right Time” whatever happens is most likely “Right” regardless of any preconceived expectations :-)
  4. Wherever it happens is the right place -Following Your passion might take you places you could never imagine in your wildest dreams
  5. When it’s over, it’s OVER! – This invites us to recognize when we’ve entered a “Cul-de-sac” or Dead End . . . and to move on.

Let’s say we all understand all of the above at a very high level. This grooms us well to take “The Law of 2 Feet” VERY seriously:

“If at any time you find yourself in a place where you feel you are neither contributing nor receiving anything of value, it is YOUR responsibility to use your 2 feet to take yourself to a place where you CAN contribute and receive . . . GO elsewhere and be USEFUL with your time, energy, and money.

The 5 Principles and the Law above mentioned are of Open Space Technology - A “methodology” often used for people and organizations to self organize around emergent issues and opportunites as they face complex issues with high potential for conflict, a diversity of people, and the need to find resolution YESTERDAY – (“Discovered” by my Father Harrison Owen)

I’d be remiss if I didn’t tie this back to Time and Money prior to signing off . . .

Often Timing is more important than money.

The seller of a home might accept less money for a contract that gives them the timing they need to move smoothly to their next house.

When you’re walking through a retail store, and you see a “GREAT DEAL” on something you really don’t need now (or at all) . . . is it a great deal?

How could your life improve if you improved your personal use of time?

We cannot “Manage” Time . . . We can only manage our use of the available time.

Same goes with money . . . My observation is that when a person is fueled by raw passion, money shows up appropriately.

So . . . quit worrying – Follow your heart!

and SOAR!

Hope you have a great week!
