Two Years After the Arsonist Fire in Anderson, CA

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

I have been to many places in the wilderness that have experienced wildfires before and, in some areas, like Yellowstone National Park, for example, fires are sometimes necessary to restore balance and produce seeds to grow more trees. That is not really the case in Anderson, California, where I went this weekend to visit an old friend from Nederland. Anderson is only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Sacramento.

My husband and I have passed through this area before, during trips to Lassen National Park and Mt. Shasta. Today, it's a different story. Much of the area still shows signs from the fire that destroyed 68 homes and 120 outbuildings and 8,200 acres in Anderson. You can read more about this and see the photographs in my personal blog today at this link: A Wake-Up Call to Review Replacement Coverage in Your Homeowner's Policy.

Elizabeth,

We’ve had two recent major wildfires fires here in Colorado Springs that destroyed nearly a thousand houses. We are still dealing with the aftermath of those fires.

That Ventura house catastrophe sounds horrifying...heck they all do.  And you are right, most folks have no clue what is in their policy.

It was just horrible Elizabeth, I remember reading about the act. How can people hurt people and our resources?

Good morning Elizabeth.  When we bought our home last year of course we transferred the insurance.  they placed a value of an additional 25K to our place.  this coming year I'm sure the replacement value to go up.  I'm heavily insured.

David Gibson I'm not sure surviving these types of disasters makes anybody a stronger person -- you always hear how strong a person is afterwards -- but it changes you and it makes you a person capable of dealing with tragedy, which is not necessarily stronger in that sense.

Chris Ann Cleland In Sacramento, buyers are usually scurrying with last-minute details, one of which involves buying homeowner's insurance, and they don't always go over the finer details or ask what happens if they are flooded or what happens if the house burns down?

Noah Seidenberg To flip a switch in your brain and purposely destroy the lives of thousands of people and to burn down so many homes, crippling a town, well, I don't know how a person could do such a thing. You'd think somebody would have spotted the signs of mental illness along the way but we don't spend resources on that anymore, thanks to Reagan.

James Dray I have replacement coverage plus 125% like you. I also carry a million-dollar umbrella policy because being fully insured is crucial in our litigious society. Blame it on the legal system and multi-billion corporations trying to find ways to deny claims.

I totally agree its important to periodically review your homeowner's insurance.  Replacement cost is an important factor.  It is also important to have a good carrier.  I had a friend, who was in Bay St. Louis when Katrina came through.  She and a neighbor lady, plus their dogs took refuge in the attic of her detached garage.  Why the garage, you ask?  Because it was actually built of stone.  The home was part of a wild bird sanctuary right on the bay.  What she told me was it wasn't the winds of Katrina that destroyed her newly built home.  It was the surge from the bay.  There insurer considered the loss as caused by flood rather than winds.  Therefore she wasn't covered!   Flood insurance, if you are in a prone area, is also important!

The old stone garage stood however, and she, the neighbor, and the dogs all survived, and she's grateful for that!

Myrl Jeffcoat Yes, precisely, your unfortunate story is definitely a solid example of why everybody should carry flood insurance. I don't care if you're living on the top of a mountain, you still need flood insurance.
