Today's Post was inspired by MIKE ROCK who said something about the "chain thingy".

This is going to be a very simple "how to" for adding a link to your blog post.  But before I get into the "how to" I'd like to let you know a little bit about the WHY.  Many times I link to my own web site in my posts and it has helped the organic rankings of the different pages I have linked to in my ActiveRain posts.  This benefit will not work unless you have a rainmaker account and are posting public posts.  Members only posts are not indexed by Google.

Now... the how to....

At the top of your blog you will see a chain link...  I've highlighted it to show you.  You drag and highlight the copy that you want to link.

You should copy and paste the URL of the place you want to link into the area circled in RED. The URL is the "address" and be found at the top of the web page you wish to link to for your readers.  It usually begins with http://  or https://

Below you will see it defaults to new window.  My recommendation is ALWAYS make it open in a new window.  And it's certainly the courteous thing to do if you are leaving a link in a comment on the post of someone else or in a contest.  And you should not leave a link in a comment to advertise your own services... that's a NO NO.  It's not nice and I delete comments on my post that advertise their own services unless I've invited people to leave a link.

And when typing the copy that will be the link it's my suggestion to make it relevant to content and not the actual address. It's my understanding that typing relative content also helps with the SEO (again in public posts only) And well looks count too and decide in the example below which one looks better to you.

Example:

http://www.lake-sinclair.com/MLS_SEARCH/page_2507092.html

vs.

Search the entire MLS for the Lake Sinclair area

See how much better the second one looks.  If you are leaving a link of your post in a contest comment it's great to type the title (which may interest others who are reading about the contest) to click on your post and read it.

And if you have a question about linking still feel free to post your questions below.  And just for fun and practice also feel free to post a link in your comment.  It can be to something you find fun and interesting and want to share, but please make it open in a new window.
