REALTOR Safety Month - September 2015

By
Real Estate Agent with Las Cruces Homes and Land

Tomorrow, September 1st, starts REALTOR Safety Month. More, now than ever, we MUST keep safety in the front of our brain. We MUST stop "the way we used to do things" and take a stand to keep ourselves away from potentially dangerous situations.

I am SO proud to be a member of the Arizona Association of REALTORs' Agent Safety Workgroup and even prouder to have been a part of creating ASAP:

ASAP is a new program to alert REALTORS® of critical safety issues. Members may submit reports of incidents they see or know about using the link below. A response team will evaluate the report and may take action, up to and including issuing a text alert to all members.

Members will be able to report situations via the AAR Safety Website - anonymously if they wish. The webpage will also include those alerts with updates included as needed/warranted.

If you are interested in creating a similar system in your state or with your association, please get in touch with me and I'll get you in touch with the right folks at AAR. I would love to see every state have something like this in place.

Hi William - we need to think about this daily. I know I've changed a lot of how I do business this past year in regards to staying safe.

Thanks Tammy. You aren't alone.  If state associations don't want to jump on this, I hope associations will. It wasn't that hard to get set up.

As a real estate licensee, you put yourself in danger every time you give a stranger a ride in your car, or meet a stranger at an empty house. Practice the following guidelines to minimize risks to your safety:

  • Ask callers to meet you in your office or a public place prior to showing them a house or meeting them at a house. If something about them seems off, don’t meet them alone.
  • Check the strength of your cell phone signal in the house you are going to show before it opens.
  • Carry an extra, fully charged cell phone battery.
  • Program emergency numbers to speed dial.
  • Keep your cell phone and car keys handy at all times.
  • Lock your handbag in your car trunk.
  • Ask the local police to place a squad car on patrol in the neighborhood during your open-house hours.
  • Establish multiple “escape” routes before the open house begins.
  • Guarantee that you can escape the backyard.
  • Release all deadbolts and locks.
  • Open all curtains and turn on all lights.
