Now that I have your attention, it is INDEED Alligator Hunting Season in Mississippi!
If you ever watched SWAMP PEOPLE on The History Channel, you may have thought alligators only exist in Louisiana, Texas, or Florida. You would be mistaken!
The Mississippi season opened on August 28, 2015 and lasts until noon, September 7 in public waters; and from August 28 - September 21 on private lands. This attachment from MS Wildlife Fisheries & Parks outlines the hunting season, required permits, and photos of the record setting alligators harvested from Mississippi waters. Two gators killed over the weekend weighed in at 822 and 826 pounds respectively!
Alligators have been spotted in residential neighborhoods that are in close proximity to lakes, creeks, and other tributaries. Several have been spotted in golf course communities and near apartments and condos on the Ross Barnett Reservoir. At times, gators need to be relocated for the safety of people and pets. Never feed an alligator and do not approach it.
For information on how gators are captured and released, follow this link provided by the MS Wildlife Fisheries and Parks which includes a short video on nuisance alligators.
