The Big Canoe Community in the North Georgia mountains has an amazing number of clubs that residents can join. Among the the most popular one is The Ridgerunners Club. The Ridgerunners Club is a friendship group for the women who live in Big Canoe, or who are property owners but come for vacations or haven't built their home in Big Canoe quite yet. The Ridgerunners Club offers day trips, special events such as Christmas parties and Springtime picnics, guest speakers, bridge and book clubs.
Ridgerunners Book Clubs
In order to join a Ridgerunners book club, one must be a member of the Ridgerunners Club. With over twenty individual small clubs, the Ridgerunners book clubs are very popular. With names like, Lettuce Read, Mountain Mavens, Happy Bookers, and Between the Covers, you can probably tell there are some very creative and fun loving women in these clubs. The clubs meet monthly to discuss the current book they are reading, and to plan ahead for future book choices.
Autumn Book Choices
The autumn list of books the clubs are currently reading includes:
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
The Rosie Project by Don Tillman
What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
Unglued by Lysa Terkeurst
Caravans by James Michener
The Dinner by Herman Koch
Jesus on Trial by David Limbaugh
The Girls of Atomic City by Denise Kierman
The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure
The Good Son by Christopher Anderson
Empire of the Southern Moon by S.C. Gwynne
Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult
Mightier Than The Sword by Jeffrey Archer
The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
Although there are over twenty actual Ridgerunner book clubs, some of the clubs choose to read the same book so there are less than twenty books listed. Book club members meet to suggest books and vote on which ones their club will read.
A Book Club for Mystery and Suspense Lovers
For anyone interested in reading books specifically about mysteries and crimes, the new Gumshoes and Cops book club has recently began meeting as well. This Big Canoe book club is not limited to only women, but anyone who is interested in reading books from those genres. The leader of this particular club is a retired Deputy Chief of Police from Los Angeles, California so he has an expertise and plenty of interesting stories to share at book club meetings. This fall this book club will be reading:
- The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Alder-Olsen and
- The Blue Wall by Reichardt and Oscar
Can you imagine curling up in your favorite chair by the fire, all cozy and warm with a good book in hand? That's what many of the residents of Big Canoe will be doing on crisp, cool afternoons and chilly evenings this fall. What a great way to spend some time in the mountain community of Big Canoe: reading a book and then getting together with friends to share interpretations and favorite quotes.
I don't know about you, but the idea of reading a good book by the fire, with my dog curled up nearby makes me want to settle in my favorite reading chair tonight and start reading! Still a bit too warm for a fire, but that image ignites my desire to go read a good book as soon as possible!
