It's that time of the year again and every youngster is ready to head out into the pumpkin patch to find the very best pumpkin available. When it comes to finding just the right pumpkin or going on an exciting adventure into a corn maze, Maryland and Virginia offer dozens of options. Here are some top recommended options for anyone looking for an afternoon of fun.

Top Maryland Locations

In Maryland, the following are some of the best choices available to families.

Make sure to confirm times before heading out to any location!

Butler's Orchard: For pumpkin fun throughout the month of October, be sure to visit Butler's Orchard located at 22200 Davis Mill Road in Germantown. This unique location is full of family fun activities throughout the month.

Clark's Elioak Farm: Enjoy the pumpkin patch, farm animals, hayrides, cow train rides and more.  Pick up some local produce and more.  Located at 10500 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City and open April 1 through Novermber 8, 2015 everyday except Monday.  Tues. thru Friday 10am to 5pm (last admission 4pm) and Sat and Sun 10am to 5:30pm (last admission 4pm).

Homestead Farm: Located on Sugarland Road in Poolesville, this location has a harvest festival every weekend in October. The festival offers a number of things to do including opportunities for kids to head out into the pumpkin patch to pick their own pumpkins. Apple picking is also available. There are hayrides that are not so scary and a hay maze, too.

Crumland Farms: Located at 7612 Willow Road in Frederick, this farm offers a fun assortment of things to do and options for every age. The mini-barnyard, giant slide, and the MooChoo train are just a few of the options. It all starts the last weekend in September and runs through November 1st. And, this location offers weekday fun, too, with activities happening Tuesday through Sundays.

Gaver Pumpkin Patch: Located in Airy, Maryland at 5501 Detrick Road, this location offers pumpkin picking beginning at the end of September. On the weekends, it offers free hayrides and sponsors a "Casey the Cow" corn maze. There is also a toddler corn maze and a pirate ship make this location family friendly.

Summers Farm: Located at 5620 Butterfly Lane in Frederick, this is another must-see for the whole family. There is a flashlight corn maze, a huge jumping pillow, and a cornfield maze in place. There are also pig races happening along with pick your own pumpkins.

Montpelier Farms: Located at 1720 Crain Hwy N. Upper Marlboro, this farm is not just a simple corn maze and pumpkin patch location.  It is so much more with attractions including face painting, duck races, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, pedal kart track, animals and more.  Open in September and October only.  September on Saturdays (10am-11pm) and Sunday (11am-7pm).  October on Friday (5pm-11am), Saturday (10am-11pm) and Sunday (11am-7pm).

Here are some great options for those in Virginia looking for farm friendly things to do:

Leesburg Animal Park: A fantastic option for all ages, Leesburg Animal Park at 19270 James Monroe Highway in Leesburg is an excellent choice. The park offers everything from an Indian teepee to a straw mountain to climb. There are inflated slides and bounces as well as unlimited hayrides and a rope swing.

Burke Nursery and Garden Center: Though it sells plants and goodies all year long, this location at 9401 Burke Road in Burke is an excellent choice for its fall festival. It takes place throughout the month of October. There is a monster truck, wobble wagon rides, farm animals, and clowns available.

Wayside Farm: Located at 5273 Harry Byrd Highway, this location has a huge Lego Superhero corn maze for the kids to enjoy. You can pick your own pumpkins, play in the playhouse, enjoy some pig races and check out the farm animals. The events take place Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout October.

Great Country Farms: Located at 18780 Foggy Bottom in Bluemont, this location has numerous features to offer including a Pumpkin' Jumpin' Pillow, pig races, rope swings, a P-Rex dinosaur that eats pumpkins and much more. It starts at the end of September and runs through October. Visitors can pick pumpkins and enjoy the corn maze, too.

Wegmeyer Farms: A top-notch location in Hamilton at 38299 Hughesville Road, this location is an authentic working farm. It is a fun experience for anyone including adults. Starting September 19 and running through November 1, the weekends here are filled with picking pumpkins, checking out a real corn maze and taking hayrides.

Hollins Farms Orchard: Another must see for the kids is this farm located at 1524 Snowden Road in Delaplane. It is the largest pumpkin patch in the northern portion of the state. When pumpkins are what you are after, you can pick your own here. There is a full barnyard of animals to check out. Visitors can enjoy a pony ride, listen to live, family friendly music, and even go on a fall hike. The location is available Wednesdays through Sundays through October.
