What Does Your Front Door Say About You?

By
Home Stager with Feng Shui Manhattan Long Island #888

After completing my Feng Shui consultation along the upper East Side of Manhattan yesterday, I decided to treat myself to the Metropolitan Museum. During my walk there, I noticed a great contrast with two neighboring front doors.

In Feng Shui, the principle for any front door is to do your best in creating a welcoming presentation. The front door is known as the "mouth of ch'i," where all opportunities, people, and energy metaphorically and sometimes literally, step into your life. Now for each person, a "welcoming entrance" can be perceived very differently as you will see below.

Which front entrace would you prefer?

I would prefer the one without the dragon, even if I do have to dodge a few plants on the way in.

Hi Laura...Definitely #2.

My front door is telling the world that I need to paint it. I keep telling it to be quiet. I'll get around to it one of these days but right now there are too many soccer and field hockey games that I don't want to miss.

Hi Laura, not a fan of dragons, so definitely Door #2 but that annoying vine would be immediately trimmed and the plants moved away a bit or smaller ones take their place.

I actually like both of them, and know that there is a definate statement from #1. I'm betting the folks that know them and visit love #1.

If I had to pick one, it would definitely be #2.  The first one doesn't welcome me.

Both are nice but Door #1 may creep some people out.  Door #2 looks elegant.  The front door (as well as front yard landscaping) are very telling to buyers.  What you see on the outside is usually what you see on the inside!

There are so many great doors in NYC and when I visit I see some of the most interesting doors.  The overall feel of Door #2 is more inviting but i'm sure there is a reason that #1 presents a more unwelcoming feel.  However I would imagine that #1 is actually an entry into a courtyard and there is a secondary door that goes to the residence which is either set back or entry to the upper floor.  #2 appears to be set closer to the street and entry into the home.  Based on this and knowing the area I would go with Door #1.

I love the first door, it actually goes alot with my personality and curiosity is struck to see what is behind it.

On a professional level, door 2 is way more inviting

I would pick door number 2... beautiful warm wood is more welcoming and heartwarming than the gothic dragon.... but it might depend on where you live and who you are trying to attract...  if your target audience is wizards door number 1 might be a real hit!

It is important to have a welcoming entrance.  I think I'll go with door #2.

Good point Laura. I've been thinking about my own front door for a while. Not only because it's a tad old, but to let more light in, more inviting, more connecetd to the world.

Door number 2 looks more inviting but lacks personality. It is just like every other door. The plant trailing down let me think of spider webs for some reason.

Interesting contrast between these two doors. The first is more unique but the lower one is more classic. My preference is the classic look, but that's just me.

I prefer door number 2 but it is hard to say based off of the limited size of the photos. Door number 1 is way cooler but not as saleable.  Trim the shrubbery around #2 though...and sweep up the fern leaves...

Laura Cerrano very good point - the door is the image of your 'face' when it comes to welcoming the guests.

Laura, definitely the bottom option. We just painted our house and our accent color is sort of charcoal. It compliments the body and the trim very nicely but makes for a dark entrance. We've brightened it up with a wreath and colorful welcome mat, plus we have our carved wooden bear out front to "say hello"!
