My heart bleeds for Lt. Joe Glieniewicz from Fox Lake, Illinois. The killers are still at large. This story hurts because I lived in Fox Lake Hills 18 years ago. My kids went to Grant High School where today's students were on lock down. I know the area very well and the many trails in near-by Forest Preserves. 59 is a route I traveled more than you can imagine. It hurts to hear about this Officer who was gunned down because I know, the Police, Fire, and Rescue in Fox Lake and the surrounding cities, incorporated and unincorporated treat everyone fairly and they are like family.
Fox Lake is a great community. The people were always like family and they looked out for each other. You never really leave a place you love, parts of it you take with you - the memories, the roads that still look familiar, the stories about the great teachers, local police, neighbors... I keep them all in my thoughts and prayers. This is a family community where I raised my children. It's the roads where I learned how to drive my first truck and a five speed too and my children learned to drive theirs too! The road where the school buses drive down those roads that were used for the funeral procession to the cemetery, driving past the neighborhood where I lived then onto Antioch where Lt. Joe Glieniewicz now rests... all brings back flashbacks of small town community where just about everybody knows your name. Rest in peace Lt. Joe.
I am saddened, so sad and confused because September seems to be a reminder of tragedy since September 11th, 2001 and it is stories like this that leave imprints of sorrow in all our hearts. Like the falling leaves, many tears are shed. I pray for this Lieutenant's family and the safety of the men and women who are in search of those responsible for this tragedy and for the people who still live in this community. Police are not the enemy - they serve and protect. They were involved in my daughter's Girl Scouts when I was their leader. They are a fabric of the community. Regardless of what month it is, time or year, people can't live in fear from those that abuse weapons and destroy other people's lives. We can't be consumed by fear allowing the enemy to take a life and worry so many people. I pray they are caught so that the people of Illinois and Wisconsin can have peace of mind.
How much better would the world be if moral rules applied? What if everyone believed in the Ten Commandments, especially, "Thou Shall Not Kill," but then again, it all begins with obedience to parents, knowing right from wrong, stealing is not acceptable, and believing, really believing in love thy neighbor as thyself. How much smarter would kids be if their schools never went on lock down because there was never a need to do so? Could society be better if there was more respect for life and no one ever thought about taking another person's life? If people believed, really believed in do no harm, then there would be fewer hurts, less sorrows, and more respect for human life. Rest in peace Lt. Joe Glieniewicz and peace be with the community and the people in Fox Lake, the surrounding areas, the children, expecially the children and the people in Wisconsin too.
