The image to the left is a technologically enhanced scan of the human brain.  You may notice the different "pretty" colors.  Please note the following:

1) The blue areas:  These are the areas of normal brain activity caused by reading the user-friendly and informative articles written by such experts as Teresa Boardman and Broker Bryant.

2) The yellow areas:  These are areas of gray matter mush created by reading article after article of MLS statistics posted to Active Rain without so much as a pretty picture to look at.

This rather severe and problematic diagnosis is knows as Informationus Overloaditis and has only one cure:  Quality Content.

If you want to get featured on Active Rain...If you want to make a lasting impression here....Please, I beg of you, consider the following points:

Blogging is a social medium:  The idea is, at it's grass roots,  to develop relationships with other people.  In a perfect world, you would develop a readership who would love you, cherish your opinions, and seek out your advice.  This is how we get clients from blogging.  In order to develop said readership, there are a couple of things that you must do:

1) Win their minds:  For this purpose, your statistics are perfect.  Everybody loves a good brain workout.  Trying to wrap my mind around what all of those numbers mean and how it applies to my business is great fun....for about 5 minutes. And then I have to.....

2) Win their hearts:  Because, at the end of the day, nobody gives a crap about your stats unless they value you as a person.   You must, therefore, offer something of yourself in your posting.  Sure, it took you thirty minutes to dig up those stats and post them here, but honestly.  I could train a chimpanzee to do that in a few weeks.  Trust me.  I just trained them to write this post (I'm in the Bahamas with the Tropicana Bikini team as we speak).  But I digress....

If you want people to value your writing and return time after time to your blog, you have to offer something interesting.  If not, you run the risk of being viewed as an information depository rather than a human being.  And I, while trying to read your posts, end up like the poor fellow above.  Some commentary to go along with those stats would do nicely. Tell us about yourself.  Play nicely with the other people who blog here.  If you can't do that, do me a favor and at least copy and paste the following picture so I'll have something to give me that warm and tingly feeling I'm looking for.  Thanks very kindly.

*Update:  After further consideration, I'd like to ammend my original train of thought on this post.  Stats are not evil.  The more I think about it, the more I realize that I sometimes want to read statistical based posts.  They give me fodder for blogging.  However, I think I like them better when they're in table format.   And, I still think they should have pretty pictures.  But, it's just my opinion.

I don't know if you are referring to me but I'm guilty. Actually I have been trying to populate localism with content (and links back to my website) for all 11 of the towns in my area. Only 3 left. When I am done with this project I will go back to the creative stuff. Too bad the localism stuff has to become a part of my blog. It is all so boring, unless you are a seller or buyer in one of those towns.

Gotta work before I can play.

Not sure if it is not also boring to sellers and buyers, especially without any comments and analysis...

Statistics, plain and ugly, are not interesting except to the very few number fanatics...

So, we have to agree that this is not the way to go,,, even on localism...

Good points Jonathan

I have had any number of RE professionals say the same thing about my websites but clients love them and come in droves. We have more leads right now than we can keep up with. To each their own but I am going to keep giving the clients what they want. Isn't that why we are here?

Love the post! And love the pup!

Stats and more I can get on Mortgage Market Guide.  I would like to learn about people outside my area and their style of business by their writing, so if I need to refer out investment clients to other parts of the US, I know where to look.

There are many different reasons to Blog and read Blog. For instance. Often times I will come to the site to do a search on a specific topic. It may be something that I need quick answers for and appreciate a top ten list type posting, answering to those specifics.

Still there are other times I search the blogs looking for nothing more than and interesting topic that I can share in by reading and providing comments on.

I don't wish to preach to the choir here as I have committed many blog offenses myself. There is one thing that I would mention though to all of us who blog. Please proof read your post out loud to someone before you hit submit. There have been many a blog that I tried to read but couldn't because it was too disjointed. It seemed to contain really good information but written in a manner that was not readable.

Like I said been guilty of many infractions myself.

Nah, I wouldn't call anybody out individually.  That isn't what we're about here.  I'm just trying to offer some advice from an avid reader in a round about way.  Take it or leave it.

At the end of the day, even the guy who writes nothing but stats is doing better than the guy who writes nothing at all.  This ones for you, Mr. I-Write-Nothing-But-Stats-Because-I'm-Very-Smart Guy.

I'm just not smart enough to keep up with all of that.

I think your advice is well stated and important to listen to, Jonathan. I know I don't always focus on other thing than posting the stats and making a few comments, unless I am doing a review of the community as a whole. Something very worthwhile to keep in mind.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Good point.  Just because someone have a keyboard and Internet connection doesn't mean they have to blog.  I have written some boring articles myself, but I am getting better ....

Jonathan,

Thanks for the points you made.  I saw myself in some of them, but it's a growing process, becoming a quality blogger.

Yeah, again....step away from the ledge....I'm not calling anybody out.  I'm not the best blogger ever myself.  Just making an observation.

I'm always reading books on blogging whenever I have n extra minute.  I'm a newbie and I hope in time I'll get much better at it.

Jonathan, thanks for the points. Definitely something we've all been guilty of a time or two and it's good to have reminders of where we can improve. Stats in and of themselves are boring and some people read them better in table format, while others get it more from a nicely written article. I try to do a little of both, but pictures and commentary definitely go farther with most people. Your sense of humor makes this particular post fun. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Jonathan, Good stuff. I think stats and such do serve a purpose on Localism but even then I believe they should be presented in an informative and still entertaining way. The reason I don't do stats and listings is because after 30 days it's old outdated news. Unless you go back and update them every couple of weeks the shelf life is very short. If I were a consumer I would much rather have someone describe their community to me than show me how many houses sold in January of 2007. But that is just my opinion and I could very well be wrong.
