Juniors at Mesa Valley Community School produced the district's highest average composite ACT score of 22.2. Palisade High School students came in at an average 21.1 and Fruita Monument High School students came in at 20.2. Juniors at Grand Junction High School were on pace with the state's average, earning an average ACT composite score of 20 according to Mesa County School District 51.
High school juniors at Palisade High School, Fruita Monument High School and Mesa Valley Community School beat the state's average ACT composite score, which was 20.1 this year.
Technically, Fruita and Palisade High Schools are not in Grand Junction, but are in Mesa County School District 51.
Composite scores at both Central High School and R-5 High School dipped from last year. Central High School students scored 18.6 last year, but scored 18.5 in this year's test. R-5 juniors' composite test scores dipped from 15.9 last year to 15.1 this year.
All juniors are required to take the ACT exam, which quizzes students on English, math, reading and science skills. Local students took the exam April 28 earlier this year. The scores are a testament to the quality of Grand Junction Schools.
The average ACT composite score for District 51 juniors who took the ACT exam in April was 19.7. That average more than satisfies the minimum ACT score required to meet new statewide graduation guidelines that will take effect for the class of 2021. New graduation guidelines determine students must earn a minimum ACT score of 18 in order to show they are prepared to graduate high school.
