Are You Paying Too Much for Gas?

Gas PumpsIt's no secret that gas prices are climbing.  As we take a look at our own records, we see that we were paying $2.81 per gallon in April of 2007.  Today, we are paying $3.39.  On a broader view, the average price of gas in Washington State has climbed from $3.088 a year ago to $3.634 today; and the average price of gas in the US has climbed from $2.872 to $3.472 in the same time.  Looking at prices yesterday, a week ago, and a month ago, we are continuing to trend upward.*

Now, it's no secret who has the best prices!  The GasBuddy.com network is a grass-roots community effort to lower gas prices. It is a network of 181 local gas price websites.  Together, they report that in a typical city, gas prices vary by about 30-50 cents per gallon in the US.  They believe that if everyone buys gas at the lower priced stations, it puts pressure on the higher priced stations to lower their gas prices since their sales will decrease.  In effect, it makes gas stations more competitive.

Today, in Vancouver, there is a $0.30 per gallon spread on the reported gas prices.  To find the best price in Vancouver, go to Vancouver WA Gas Prices.

Hi Patty & Scott,

I think that this GasBuddy site is of great value, especially to Realtors. Even though I retired from real estate in South Florida last January after 19 years in the business, I will definitely pass this information along to all my Realtor friends across the country.

Thanks for posting this info. You're great!

Best Regards,

I am in the western suburbs of Chicago and I just paid $3.79.  They also advertise our best gas prices on our local news.  Thanks for posting.

Ok..the cheapest in my area is 3.47, a year ago 2.86 Wow, no wonder they know me by my first name at the gas station :)

Laura, wow $3.79 and we thought that $3.39 was bad.

04/18/2008 05:06 PM by Patty & Scott Carroll - RE/MAX, Vancouver WA (RE/MAX Equity Group)

Maria, we know in January of last year in our area it was $2.31. And here in Washington we have to pump it ourselves, so they never get to know our first name.  : )

I believe I just paid 3.71 a gallon a couple days ago but an article ran in the paper today stating that our prices here in Bellingham, Wa.  were reflecting a price due to our closeness to Canada. http://www.bellinghamherald.com/business/story/384431.html

I say, ...hockey pucky its definetly something bigger!

Hope the link is ok,?..let me know

Katherine, wow that is getting a bit to close to the dreaded $4.00 mark that we keep hearing about. Hmmm it does make you wonder doesn't it?

It's amazing how gas has superseded all other costs in my operating budget. I'm going to check the site out- thanks!

Chuck, we were shocked too when we went back and looked at our gas dollars $$$$ spent in 2007. And for 2008 we should keep track of our gas receipts since the mileage deduction and what you actually did spend may have a big differance.

Patty & Scott - Your home is beautiful! You truly are blessed :)

04/19/2008 11:02 AM by Maria Mastrolonardo - Naperville Illinois Real Estate (RE/MAX of Naperville)

I guess I shouldn't feel too bad here in New Jersey.   I had a shock today however. Went past the gas station Thursday, $3.28 per, Yesterday it jumped to $3.43 per. I thought, wow, I better fill up today!  Got to the staion and it was $3.55 per! 27 cents hike in two days.    BTW, those are super(premium) prices!

04/19/2008 06:03 PM by James Lockard - Realtor, Allendale, NJ (RE/MAX Properties - Saddle River)

James, that is just crazy. Hopefully GasBuddy can help you find the best price in your area.  : )

Thanks for the info!  I will definitely have to look into GasBuddy.  Now if we could just start working more on alternate fuels that can be made available for mass consumption...

04/20/2008 12:41 PM by Josh G (Self)

I remember the good old days when it was worth it to cross the river and save .10 per gallon because you had a lower gas tax...You drive to Vancouver now and you can easily pay .05 more per gallon.

Todd, we hope you are having a great vacation! Are you going to get a chance to find any stupid fish today?
