I need a Moving Quote - Now What?

We have all had those calls from friends and clients that start with "I need your recommendation for movers".  This may include local moves across town or maybe across country.  As Realtors we are often the source for recommendations for many services and when we help someone sell a house a request for suggestions for movers,  if you haven't had this request,  is only a matter of time!

There are many options for moves today.  One great option used by many friends and clients is the use of moving containers.  These moving containers are delivered to the property and the owners can  load their container on their own time line as they sort and pack.  The other option is to have a company pack your belongings and load them into the container.  The containers can then be taken to a storage facility and held until the owner is ready for the container to be delivered to the new location.

When choosing a moving container you can choose from different sizes to meet differet  needs.  There may be different sizes of containers depending on whether you are using local storage or planning for a long distance move.  These moving containers are great for folks moving who want to  order additional containers as they work through the sorting and packing process.  This is a great option for folks not sure initially what they will take, donate or charity or give to families.

These companies can also provide moving boxes, bubble wrap  for packing and  offer great suggestions for folks to  make the most of their move and ensure their belongings are packed correctly.  When you call a container company they also ask questions about your household  so they understand what is being moved, IE light household items versus heavy collections (I think about a 10,000 book collection my college professor friend owns).

Is there a down size to using moving containers?  If you are comfortable packing and stacking your belongings in the container this may be an option for you.  You need to be sure you are carefully wrapping your breakable items and packing them correctly.  Don't forget to label the box content AND room location.  When you stare at 100 brown boxes in your living room you are going to wonder not only where they go but what is inside and no, this will not be like Christmas!

If packing your own boxes and loading items into a moving container isn't for you, there are moving and storage companies that will provide professional packers to come in, wrap and pack everything from plates and glasses to dressers and sofas.  All items will be packed and labeled.  The packers will label the room where the item came from (or is going to if you provide this information).  They will let you know how long to expect your home contects to take getting from Point A to Point B.  If you need to arrange for your items to be place in storage they can help with that too!

If you are using a moving company you will want the moving company to send an estimator to your home and look at the household content and truly understand what will be moved.  If you have very substantial furniture, be sure they they understand and account for the weight of that furniture.  Do not let someone give you an estimate over the phone. The estimator needs to see the furniture and factor in anything unique you may have in your home.  Do you have that 10,000 book collection? A Fine art collection? Perhaps an extensive collection of any something needing special handling. Be sure the estimator understand your needs.

A question that will likely come up is insurance.  Like any insurance you want to understand what is covered.  Here are 6 questions you should be asking:

1.  What is the cost?

2. Is there a deductible and if so what are the options you can purchase?

3. What documentation or proof is needed for a claim?

4. How soon after claim is submitted will you receive payment.

5. Are only the boxes packed by the movers covered or are the boxes you packed covered as well?

6. Are you insured for replacement value?

Moving is a major undertaking and takes planning and research.  Do your due diligence.  Ask friends and family for recommendations. Check the Better Business Bureau and other websites providing feedback.  And when you finish, consider going online and sharing your experience, good or bad.  We are quick to complain or comment about bad experiences so be sure to give credit where credit it due.

So, when you need a moving quote, consider not only traditional moving companies but moving containers as well.  Understand your options and plan ahead.  Make it a great move!
