Bacteria in Well Water Means What to a Homeowner?
If you have a well for your home water system as a real estate homeowner or renter you should be aware of what is in the water. If you are renting you need to ask the landlord and hopefully the well has been tested and a report provided to you. What are you looking for in a water test is probably the most common question I get in real estate? You are looking for the following items:
Absent of bacteria is essential from well water which means coliform, e. coli & chlorine are not present in it. A well water check periodically of your well is important and there are water testing labs in every state that are reputable and will do it at a cost to you.
For the health of your family it is a must to have no bacteria in the well water. If the house has been empty for awhile it is typical to have coliform in the well water. This can be easily be fixed by adding bleach to the well, letting it sit for 24+ hours and then flushing it out of the well by running all the house faucets. Then you should have the well water re-tested to ensure the problem of coliform is removed. Again there are water testing labs that can do this well water correction for you.
In RI real estate I recommend that all my clients with wells do this periodically. You have a family you care for so take the natural steps to ensure their health from the water. It is one thing you can control.
