Sometimes it has been very handy coming from a construction background. I have a Buyer in the process of buying a house with a bad septic. The Seller has a bid to replace it and will have it done prior to closing or escrow for afterwards. (it depends on the weather and local municipality)
So I called the Septic Installer to confirm that their bid included making all the necessary hook ups in the basement, regarding the alarm and such. He had confirmed my suspicion that that was not included since it was something he could not do and take the liability for. He informed me that the Seller was going to do the electrical hookup himself. I said 'thank you' and bid him good day.
The Listing Agent was surprised of the development, and I asked how the Seller was going to do this if the septic wasn't installed until after closing and he had to escrow funds. The buyer certainly wanted it to be done correctly and by a properly licensed professional.
I used to be in construction and most of the years as a real electrician, and I did my share of 'sidejobs'. But I have learned the hard way recently that liability is nothing to mess with. A Professional cost a little more, but they do the job right. And if something goes wrong, they have the insurance to cover that liability.

I totally agree. Go with the person who is bonded and insured and in business and will back up their product. You get what you pay for is usually true.
