Points Of Pride: Welcome To Gilbert, AZ!
We are always looking to take pride in the great communities in Arizona and Gilbert has a lot that we can certainly be proud of!
Recently, the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce released a beautiful document titled “This Is Gilbert, Arizona” which gives highlights for the year 2014 and a number of things to look forward to by the end of 2015 for this incredible town in Maricopa County.
First, though, let’s touch on some Gilbert, AZ history:
Gilbert is a growing 72.6 square miles just southeast of downtown Phoenix. Back in the 80’s, it had a population under 6,000, but it has grown to nearly 236,000 as of 2014! While Gilbert is larger than Washington D.C., Boston, Miami and Minneapolis, it has small farm-town roots.
Early in the 1900s, William Gilbert donated land to the Arizona Eastern Railway for a rail line to be built between Phoenix and Florence, Arizona. What blossomed though was a quaint town known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World.” The growth of Gilbert was fueled by the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and of the Eastern and Consolidated Canals in 1911. Gilbert remained a farm town until the 1970’s when the Town Council began initiatives to shape the Gilbert we know today.
And boy, do we have a beautiful Gilbert, AZ today!
Gilbert has transformed itself into currently the most populous incorporated town in the US with a nationally ranked K-12 education system, a fluorishing housing industry plus booming business. From being a center for dairy products, grains, melons, cotton, and raising cattle and sheep, Gilbert now hosts companies focusing on Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace and Defense, Bio-Technology, Clean Technology and Renewable Energy!
You'll also find excellent neighborhoods and masterplanned communities here like Morrison Ranch, Power Ranch, as well as amenities and attractions like Water Tower Park, Hale Center Theater and SanTan Village.
Clean, safe and vibrant, Gilbert has been awarded accolades like the second safest city in the U.S, the 22nd best city to live in, the 3rd best city to find a job in, the best city for working parents and the 9th best city for families!
Other interesting facts: Gilbert has a AA+ credit rating, the lowest household cost in the region for property/sales tax and utility services, plus its three public school districts are all A-rated.
And there’s a whole lot to look forward to, too! By the end of 2015, The Chamber expects the population to exceed 240,000, the bustling downtown heritage district will feature four new restaurants, a new four-year university named Saint Xavier University will open in Fall and three new lakes will be added to the community fishing program. There are definitely plenty to get excited about for the place that has a “small town feel with a big city appeal!”
