As I've driven down the road this week, I find myself checking...are the blue bonnets still there?  Comparatively, we haven't had as many bluebonnets this year, but they've been around.  The first blue bonnet that I personally found this spring was growing in an abandoned parking lot.  Blue bonnet in parking lot

Fortunately, those of us living in the Brazos Valley, we are just minutes from Washington County, one of the best places in Texas to enjoy the bluebonnets and other spring flowers.

My favorite spot to view the flowers is at the Old Baylor Park site in Independence.  It is a very popular spot to take pictures.  (The picture below was taken by Calvin Morrison of me and my horse.)

To get there, from College Station, the most scenic route is to drive through Navasota, take Hwy 105 and turn on the scenic trail - FM 390.

On 390, just west of FM 50, are the ruins of the original Baylor College and it's female department.

In addition to the ruins, the park features a one room schoolhouse from the 1900's and two of the earliest homes in Washington County.  These homes, which belonged to John P. Cole are open on weekends for tour in March and April.   John P Cole home

A drive to this area is not complete unless you stop off at the Antique Rose Emporium.

The Antique Rose Emporium is located on the east side of Highway 50, next to the ruins of the Baylor campus for males.  I think you could visit the Rose Emporium a 100 times and it would be different each and every time, depending on what was in bloom.   High quality plants are available for sale.  However, even if you have enough resolve to NOT buy anything, the stroll through the gardens is simply delightful.

Beautiful, truly beautiful country!  I remember seeing veils of Blue Bonnets alongside roads when I was 6 and my family lived in Texas for a year.  Thank you for the nice reminder!

Sondra:  Thanks for the great pictures.  I'm going to have to go out and take some of the local bluebonnets before they are gone.  They will look great on my website.  Thanks for sharing...

We love the Antique rose place! They have really neat flowers including antique irises and lillies. Onky a short drive for you and us. Great for a short get-away.

Hi Sondra - those are so pretty!  I never realized that's what bluebonnets looked like until seeing them in your pictures.  Lovely pictures - they're just so pretty to look at, and the one with the log house is so peaceful looking.

Thank you Sondra for sharing the beauty in your area. You inspire me to go out and put my dusty Nikon D50 to work! It was supposed to snow again this week so I had not caught the shutterbug yet. Thanks!

Sondra - What beautiful pictures. My favorite is the field of Wildflowers and the very, very old schoolhouse.

Congratulations for being recognized for your fantastic pictures that you entered in the contest. We didn't have many wildflowers down our way this year due to lack of rain so we really enjoyed seeing your Wildflowers.

God Bless Texas!

Sondra! Congratulations for your win in the contest. My favorite photo is the old school house. I can look at it and simply see the school children playing in that yard. Their little school lunches swinging as they run inside as to not be late. The teacher standing at the door calling them all in frustrated because they are still tumbling in the grass and ignoring her.

You've done a beautiful job and thank you! Later in the rain~Deb
