September is REALTOR® Safety Month: 6 Suggestions for Safety

Every day, REALTORS® have to remain aware of their surroundings to fend off potential attackers.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe:

1. Keep it light - Show properties before dark. Park on the street or in public view.
2. Carry your phone with you at all times - Communication is key.

3. Don’t be too public - Limit the amount of personal information you share. Consider advertising without using your photograph, home phone number and/or home address in the newspaper or on business cards.

4. Touch base - Always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back; leave the name and phone number of the client you are meeting and schedule a time for your office to call you to check in.  When you meet clients for the first time, write down license plate number or consider texting it to your office/staff before you begin.

5. Order matters - When showing a home, always have your prospect walk in front of you. I actually disagree with this one personally, when showing a home I am responsible for those I represent.  I like to open doors for clients, but I go in first.  If there is an animal, squatter, (all the above have happened) I want to be the first one in.

6. You take the wheel - Whenever possible, take your own car to a showing. I ask clients if they would like to ride with me, giving us an opportunity to discuss each property, area, etc as we are viewing properties.  I would never dream of getting into a car with a client(s), and you shouldn't either.

Good luck out there.

All good tips. I would suggest that realtors add safety apps to their phone. It alerts authorities or family members right away if there is any trouble. But most importantly, listen to your inner sense.
