Meet some of the dinosaurs of Vernal Utah! They are a familiar sight in Vernal. Dinosaur fossils were found near Vernal in 1909. 350 tons of bones were removed at the time, and continue today. Some complete skeletons were found. The area became a National Monument in 1915, where people could view the process of the removal of dinosaur bones. Unfortunately, the monument has been closed for repairs to the building. Replicas of dinosaurs can be viewed at the Utah Field House of Natural History Museum

There is great opportunity for employment in vernal due to energy exploration. Great place to live and many choices of homes to choose from. I enjoy selling real estate in this area and would love to show you around.

Julie, thank you for this enlightening blog.  I had no idea you lived in "Dinosaur" Land...

The post office dinosaur being decorated for various holidays takes the cake.  I would love to see some pictures of it in full holiday garb!  Too funny...

When will they re-open the monument?

These are so much fun! Not only do they provide whimsy but give an idea of the history of the area in their own way! Thanks for sharing!

I will try to get pictures of the dinosaur during the holidays and post them next year. The building at the monument had structural problems since 1957. The clay the building was built on was unstable. They plan to restore the building or build a new one in a different location. It is closed indefinitely. I will post something if I hear of any changes.

The quarry visitor center  was where you could see the bones being uncovered from the earth. Replicas of the fossils have been moved to the outdoor visitor center and a video is provided to show the fossil wall and the work done there. Rangers at the visitor center answer questions about the area. There is 210,000 available for hiking , river trips, and wildlife
