Buying A Home 102

It is often said that you shouldn’t let your emotions play a part in home buying. While that may be good advice, it is almost impossible to follow. Buying a home is an extremely emotional process and as long as you don’t let them completely rule you, your emotions can help you choose a home that you will be happy and comfortable in for years to come. When dealing with the financial aspects of home buying, your emotions should be kept under control. They can play a vital role however, when it comes to choosing a house that you can truly call home.

Know what you Want

While finding a “perfect” home is almost impossible, you should at least have a general idea of what you are looking for. For example, how many bedrooms you need, how much yard space you’d like, etc. can affect which houses you view and which ones you pass over. Home buying is stressful enough without looking at dozens of houses that don’t fit your criteria.

That being said, nothing should be set in stone. If you hold out for a home that has everything that you want, you may find yourself severely disappointed. Look at the overall picture of the home and envision what can be done to make it better suit your tastes and needs. Perhaps an otherwise suitable home is lacking a garage that you want. As long as there is room to add a garage in the future, the house could be just what you want. Likewise, a home that lacks a formal dining room, but has a large enough lot to add one on could be just what you want. You would also have the added benefit of being able to design the dining room exactly the way you want it.

Don’t allow the Former Owners’ Décor to cloud your Vision

Not everyone has the same tastes when it comes to home décor. In fact in some cases taste may not even enter the picture. Don’t be deterred by garishly painted walls or an over-abundance of clutter in a home. Home buying involves looking to the future. Look at the layout of the rooms themselves and give your inner artist free reign. Picture them as they would look with fewer knick-knacks or in colors that suit your tastes. It may take some elbow grease and a few coats of paint to cover that nightmarish green in the kitchen or living room, but if the room itself is suitable, it will be well worth the effort. The key to finding your dream home is compromise. There will always be things that are non-negotiable, such as a large lot or a good school district, but be flexible where possible.

When you’ve found a home that you are happy with, check out the neighborhood. If possible, talk with some of your neighbors and get a feel for things. While a less than perfect neighbor may not be a deal breaker, you should know what you’re getting into. If you don’t hit it off the first time you meet, there is still hope for the future. If your new neighbors are truly people that you don’t intend to interact with, there is a great deal of truth in the quote “Good fences make good neighbors.” Home buying is a wonderful, hectic, trying time in your life, but when you’ve finally found a house that feels just right, the rewards make it all worth while.
