World Heart Day is September 29, 2015!

World Heart Day is September 29, 2015.

Did you know that 17.3 MILLION people die from cardiovascular disease World Heart Dayeach year? Sobering fact, isn’t it.

World Heart Day calls attention to this fact and gives us  the opportunity to “take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD).”

This year’s focus is on our environment, or rather making sure that everyone has the opportunity to make heart healthy choices in their home, where they work and where they play.

This could include working to provide healthy green spaces or places to walk and ride bicycles; encouraging healthy meals in our schools and work environments; and ensuring that we all are free from environments where there is second-hand smoke and other air pollutants.

CVDs are any diseases of the heart, vascular disease of the brain (think stroke) or disease of the blood vessel.

Download the Eat for Goals app for your children.  They can score goals to see healthy recipes from their favorite football (soccer) players.

Find out your Heart Age with this calculator.

What you can do now for you and your family-

1.Learn the warning signs for heart attack and for stroke.

2.You can do things now to protect your heart even if you have a family history of cardiovascular disease.

3.Stop Smoking NOW.

4. Get up!  Get moving!

Every year 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke.

World heart dayOne other thing….. 16 years ago, we spent 4 months chasing down what was wrong with my husband, Larry.  He saw cardiologists and had every test he could have.  But they could come up with nothing. I pressed Larry to insist that his cardiologist give him an angiogram.  The result-99% blockage in the right artery.  Thankfully this was not in the widow-maker.

He’d been diving the whole time and it scares me to think of what could have happened.  Larry had 2 stents put in and he was back diving shortly after that.

If you or your loved one is feeling off, listen to your body.  And, take charge of it and your own health.  Push to get answers, and if you don’t find them with one doctor, find another.

World Heart Day is September 29.  Please love your heart and take care of it.

Good morning Kathy Streib,

Excellent post..so glad Larry took the angiogram..it saved his life. Stents are a wonder because they really do make a difference! When your body is off you are right..listen and see your doctor. Make those necessary changes for a heart healthy life style!

Dorie- The doctors said that his heart muscles were good... just the blockage.  We have to be the ones in charge of our bodies.

Heart disease is such a huge killer, Kathy! And you are so right when you say we need to listen to our bodies... so many people just ignore tell-tale signs.

you know, Nina, I think part of it is because it's such a pain to go to the doctor.  You have to wait and fill out pages of forms and then still not get answers.

So very important to stay aware and take the best care possible of our hearts.  My Father had some heart issues around 10 years ago, had 3 stints put into his heart, but has not had any issues since then.  His doctor is very good and we are thankful for that.

Brian- glad to hear that your father is well.  We have to learn to know our bodies and when things aren't right.

A friend of mine was just exhausted since the death of her mother and chalked it up to depression or the meds they gave her for the depression.  So ditched the meds and still felt like a slug.  Went to the doc and had a blockage that needed a stint.  So glad she got it checked out and fixed.

Good morning Kathy. You and Larry were very fortunate to discover the problem, many are not as fortunate. We workout 4-6 times a week, as we know, if you don't take care of it, it won't take care of you.

Wonderful post!

Kathy Streib I nearly became one of those statistics last Feb. I didn't even know I was having a heart attach and avoided the Dr/Hospital for almost 12 hours before I decided it was more than indigestion. I'm not over weight, I'm physically fit and very active. There is a history of high blood pressure in our family but every time I'd been examined in the past the nurse always complimented me that my blood pressure was excellent. It just goes to show you never know who or when a heart attack may strike.
