As most of you know, I run a few different blogs,  some with WordPress.org, and some with TypePad.  I just had one of those "Duhhhh..." Moments with one of the newer blogs on TypePad.

I was tweaking stuff, and in the process, I happened to look at the source code and saw this:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" />

Huh?????  I certainly wouldn't intentionally tell a search engine robot it wasn't welcome.  Then I remembered.  Usually when I'm first building a site with TypePad, I leave the "Publicize this Weblog" option checked "no".  I'd forgotten to change that to "yes" when I finished the building part.  Ooops.

With TypePad, the "Publicize this Weblog" tool is found under Weblogs -> Configure -> Publicity

And you want to be sure you choose "Yes" under "Publicity Preferences".  Scroll further down on the "Publicity Preferences" screen, and you can edit keywords and meta tags, too.

Checking "No" at "Publicize this Weblog" generates the "nofollow" code.

Guess I'll need to wait a little longer before that new blog shows up on anybody's radar :-)

Nice blog about whatever it is.  I have no idea what you were discussing.  Maybe you could enlighten me because it sounds like a toll to use for blogging, MAYBE?  There are so many of us who are new to all this and old enough to remember that a Type Pad was a note tablet you doodled on when you were contemplating something like "omphealoskepsisism".

Wayne -- TypePad and Wordpress are both blogging platforms used to create individual blogs outside of Active Rain.  There are pros and cons to both ... and staunch supporters in both camps.

There is a very active WordPress Group here on Active Rain.  And a not-so-active TypePad Group and don't miss the "My Other Blog Is" group

omphealoskepsisism  .... Ok... It didn't Google ...l What is it?  :-)

Hi Cheryl

I just stopped in to say hello. I haven't even thought of approaching typepad.  Wordpress is headache enough.  Which do you prefer?

Chris, Hi!

Truth to be told, for me, TypePad is more logical and much easier.  For example, you ever try to hack a WordPress Theme to make wider columns? ... like this  http://activerain.com/blogsview/465469/Modifying-A-WordPress-Theme  ...

Well, hell, the same thing can be done in TypePad's  custom templates with about three clicks, and no coding.

With coding, I can make TypePad jump through all kinds of hoops.

What TypePad doesn't do, though ... is run PHP .... for example, if I wanted to randomly shuffle my contributor list on http://www.nelalive.net/ like Greg does on http://www.bloodhoundrealty.com/BloodhoundBlog/  I'd be SOL.  But I decided NELA could live with a static contributor list.

Hi CJ, That is a great guideline and one I would bet most people miss the first time around. Or at least until the blog doesn't show up and they begin the hunt for hours and hours to figure out why. I remember just a year ago when I would have asked the same question that L. Wayne asked. Isn't it just amazing what we have learned. Even a year ago, I suspect that most of us were still learning at a rapid rate. In a year or two when most of the others will start blogging. I wonder what they will need to learn and how long it will take them to do the many things we are learning in the here and now.

Hey, CJ  I missed the part where you can edit meta tags and keywords.  It's not real obvious to me where that is.

One thing about the "Advanced Templates" on TypePad is that you can't just plug in any old widget as you can do with their pre-designed templates.  You kinda have to know code and CSS.  Not everybody is so savvy.

I'm a TypePad user, though, and perfectly happy.

Ooops!  Sorry, CJ. I went back and looked and saw the meta tags and keywords edit box,

Ken --

Yeah, the keyword box is down at the very bottom of that screen, easy to miss.

BTW -- With Advanced Templates you can just copy and paste the widget code into a sidebar.  Open up the current design template list, click on one of the sidebars....

......  and paste in the widget code  (FYI this is Google Adsense code)

Amparo,

Sometimes it takes a few hours for the mapping to process ....  GoDaddy's instructions say up to 24 hours .... did you just recently do the mapping?

If case you didn't see it, here's a pdf of my step-by-step that was posted in Active Rain a long time ago.  Maybe a small step by missed somewhere along the line?

Caution: CAT BLOG AHEAD

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
