Keep Your Head in the Game

If you ever played an organized athletic activity, no doubt you've heard a coach say to a player, "Keep you head in the game, nnff&$".  (nnff&$ is a place holder for whatever term of endearment the coach had for your team.)

As brokers and agents, we have to keep our head in the game too. Personal safety is always something about which we have to be concerned, for ourselves and clients or customers with whom we are showing around.

Long ago I worked for a company that was very safety conscious. The sign below shows their main safety slogan.

” No Job Is So Important And No Service Is So Urgent That We Cannot Take Time To Perform Our Work Safely ”

So when showing a home I try to focus on the physical surroundings-

  • Where should we step (head up and not on MLS sheet, phone, or tablet)
  • Watch your head
  • Point out steps inside the home
  • Loose hand rails or stairs, toys or tools on the ground or floor

You get the idea. Some showings can be like walking through a mine field.

The video below is not about a showing malfunction, but it is about safety.

Be careful out there. And keep your head in the game.

Wayne - I was always told that it is better to be safe than sorry.

Lucky that stump didn't take out one of the homes.

Wayne, watch your head!  Watch out for Fang (I know, the sellers call him Fido).  Watch for what Fang left in the back yard!  Safety is important!

Excellent information! Safety is so important! I remember once walking into a foreclosure and seeing A RAT among all the trash, boxes and other items left behind.

I've taken it twice now and it's clear it is not just for women agents. Nicole Doty - Gilbert Real Estate Expert nailed it  when she said we need to think of the safety of our clients as well.

Wayne, great advice and reminder to keep our eyes open and head up. I was showing a house this summer, and when I opened the door to step in, I backed out and told my clients that there were dead birds on the floor. They decided not to go in, and we moved on. I called the LA and told her about what I saw and she had not been in the house for months.

Hi Wayne, yes great post and I do the same when showing a home, especially when there is a step down someone might not see.
