5 steps to be a successful Real Estate Agent...

I entered the Real Estate Market because I bought and sold a home and thought "I can do this"!

I DID NOT do any of the following:

  • Consider the cost
  • Have a marketing plan
  • Check hours needed
  • Research companies to work for
  • See how much average agents make and how many homes does that take to make that

I followed my gut, stepped out in faith and jumped in! I sold 12 homes my first 5 months and have done well every since . I also knew I would go with the company I am with and have been for 10 1/2 years!

MY FIRST CHECK IN REAL ESTATE

I have been incredibly successful but I don't recommend everyone  start their real estate career this way.

I have seen many agents come and go over the years because they DID NOT :

  • Consider the cost- There are many fees in this business: MLS fees, company splits, signs, lock boxes, closing gifts, continuing education etc... Can you afford this until you start getting closings?
  • Have a marketing plan-If you fail to plan, you plan to fail they say. Have a plan or a sphere of influence you can start talking to immediately and get an online prescense (ACTIVE RAIN!)
  • Check hours needed- on average I work 40-60 hours per week! I was lucky all my kids were older so I could put in the hours needed : midday to late evening and weekends. If you have small kids you may not be able to do the hours this job requires!
  • Research companies to work for- make sure you know what you are paying and how much! Some companies charge a low fee up front, but you pay much more on the back end!!
  • See how much average agents make and how many homes does that take to make that-do you know what you want to make every year? Then you have to know how many houses you will have sell to make that?!

Once you have researched your options and are licensed:

Get dressed up everyday, go to the office and listen to other agents, you will learn alot!

Take phone time, wear your badge everywhere.. even on your pajamas!!

Having faith helps too!

Great post, I see a lot of agents especially younger once come in and leave within the year. To some extend I blame the TV shows like Million Dollar Listing or some HGTV shows that show none of the work required to get a check. If you plan and work hard though it is an amazing and rewarding career, sure beats working for an hourly wage. Have a great week!

Tracy, I started out like you and got lucky.  While I started out in the perfect office for a rookie, I should have looked around at the end of my first year.  It just never occurred to me at the time.

Good advice.

Hello Tracy, You are so right about a marketing plan.  I have a friend that figure mailing direct mail was old fashion but it still works.
