Ask an Ambassador: which topic should I use?

I recently read a post by Jon Zolsky about the topics. He brings up a great point about that I believe needs to be addressed.  Bob Stewart weighed in that some people don't tend to think about what goes where when picking a topic.  So I'd like to talk about the topics a bit and ask your opinion of what kinds of topic titles  you'd like to see added.  And don't go nuts.  You used to put in your own topic and we had categories as far out as toe nails.

The "Professional" topics are:

ActiveRain Community

  • Things you write for others in the community to read go here. Even if you are in a family crisis and requesting members send you good vibes or pray for you. It's a great member to member topic.

Real Estate Best practices

  • A great topic if you are sharing something that works for you or asking for advice about something others are doing. But again generally a professional to professional audience.

Real Estate Industry

  • If you are writing about changes in the industry at large or business models this could be a great pick.

Real Estate Sales and Marketing

  • A peer to peer place to write about your market trends and how you market. It's a great topic for those who are not agents but marketing to us agent to put their posts if they are trying to get business from others there.

Real Estate Technology & Tools

  • Get a new camera, a new app or think others could benefit from some tool you are using be it physcial or electronic this is a great topic to choose

Mortgage / Finance

  • Again peer to peer if you want to share information about mortgage and finance

Just For Fun

  • A peer to peer topic to let your hair down or let off some steam and vent a little. My throwback Thursday photo posts I use this topic

The professional group of topics are meant to used mostly for peer to peer. That's why the other group is called "consumer". Let's talk about those a bit.

The "Consumer" topics are:

Home Buying

  • A great topic for posts for buyers, from first time buyers to second home and investment buyer. Things consumers buyers want to read

Home Selling

  • Advice to sellers on why they should call you, what to do to get ready to sell their house, this is your topic.

Home Improvement

  • It's pretty self explanatory here.  It's a great place for posts about flooring, cabinets, pain colors, interior design, insulation, new roof material etc. This list can go on and on for what fits here.

Real Estate General Information

  • I put things that affect my market here.  If a new business is moving to town that will bring new jobs thus changing the real estate market by bringing buyers it's real estate information to me. Yes, it's also local news, but if it affects the market I choose this category.

Real Estate Market Trends

  • Use this topic for your market reports.

Lending / Financial

  • Of course loan officers use this one a lot, but I do if I'm writing about a specific program that is in my market. We have lease holds in my market and only certain lenders will finance those, I choose this topic when writing about that.

Local News and Events

  • Localism posts go here for me.  And actually if public pointed this tends to be my "catch all"  If I write about a global or national event and it's public pointed I put it here because nothing seems to fit.

Listings

  • Do I even need to explain when to use "listings" as a topic?  I didn't think so.

I would love to see a new topic to use in the consumer categories for those things that don't fit. Perhaps a "in the news" (that doesn't have local in the name)  "editorial/opinion" maybe. Any suggestions from you as to topics that ActiveRain might consider adding in either category?

Tammy, this is excellent information. Thanks and bookmarked just in case I'm not sure where to put some posts.

Tammy Lankford,

In many cases it's what *I* think. But I'm hopeful we can add a couple of new topics after a well thought out discussion.

Great post I want to say first and foremost Tammy Lankford  second where would I put the post I did today of the opening of the new movie theater in a local area . I also did add the movie I saw but the theater was a local boutique opening ..I put it under just for fun but is that where it really belonged ???

Oct 09, 2015 01:25 PM
Tammy Lankford,

Hannah Williams I would have put it under local news and events.  your post about a theater opening is news for your community.  And certainly should be in the topics consumers can find

Tammy clearly you have clout and these are all a good start, not wanting to go off topic it would be good to announce in advance when the Curtain will be up so my thought is a Topic " Active Rain Related Issues etc..." let the imagination run free...Endre

Tammy Lankford,

If you mean yesterday, it was posted, but I think it happened at least an hour early. And there is a blog called keeping you in the loop.  If you don't already follow it, it's a must.

Tammy Lankford most of these headers cover most of the topics we'd like to post in.

Many times, I prefer to post in ActiveRain community.

Now we may want to have sub-headers to LISTING and MARKET TRENDS based on geographic location - if that helps SEOs.

Oct 09, 2015 02:02 PM
Tammy Lankford,

I don't think it helps SEO at all.  But if someone (from the public) is on ActiveRain searching for something it would certainly be helpful to have posts in the consumer topics if you want them found.

Good morning Tammy. Really great job with your post, I haven't taken on many of the topics you included, as there is so much to write about.

Is that a photo of a Ridgeback?

Make it a great weekend!

Joe Petrowsky no his mom was pure bred Great Dane and his dad? well the vet's best guess was German Shepherd because of the litters coloring.  But he's just our Glen now, and we love him.

I'm here for both the community topics and the ability to post to consumers.  You are close to another price break.  Might be time to get your rainmaker account and expand tot he public

Actually, when I got comments, I was surprised, that members used Active Rain Community as pretty much catch-all category.

I thought that it was anything about Active Rain for members only leaving the only option to use "Just for fun" even when you write about things, which are anything but fun...

Oct 09, 2015 10:29 PM
Tammy Lankford,

well your post certainly shows there are a need for a few more topics

I know I've found myself wondering where a post should go, and no category quite fitting. The only example I can think of is my recent post about teal pumpkins for Halloween. It's not a "local" event. But Local News and Events is where I put it.
