Real Estate Sales & Jury Duty in Georgetown, TX

I was recently called for jury duty and reported as requested. Not much choice really.   I have served on juries in the past and also been called, but was not selected to serve.  For some reason I was convinced I would not be called, due in part to that day was my birthday.

As I sat in a room full of potential jurors, I was surprised how many people wanted out of this obligation at any cost. They were too busy, too pre-occupied, or too indifferent to being selected.  I am certain some of the participants had legitimate reasons to be excused and those excused absences are well defined.  The ones that caught my attention were capable of serving, but just didn’t want to do so.

Well, as you have probably guessed I was called, served, and spent my entire week listening to testimony, and wrangling by attorneys.  In the end, the accused pled to a mildly lesser charge and was convicted.

Why am I blogging about a seemingly routine civic duty?  Well for one thing this was a case of aggravated sexual assault of a 7 year old girl.  That’s right,  a 7 year old.  Makes you sick to your stomach doesn’t it. Secondly, had a jury not been there to hear the evidence they could not get the accused to plead. Finally, this disgusting guy is now in jail to 40 years, with no chance for parole for 30 years.

I think we done good.

Brian Rugg I commend you for your service. It is every citizen's obligation to maintain the legal system we enjoy. As far as the convicted goes, the penalty was not severe enough; I guess for him, it was not my call.

Yes, a guy like that belongs in jail forever - or executed.

My worry through all of it would be whether the evidence presented was truthful and complete, because it would be terrible to convict someone of such a crime if he wasn't really guilty.

The last time I got called for jury duty I was excused when I raised my hand and said no, I could not find an 18 year old boy guilty of rape when the girl was 17 and a willing partner. After the judge told us the penalty and asked if we had a problem with it, we all sat stunned for a minute. Then I raised my hand and that broke the dam. After me probably half of the prospective jurors joined in to say they couldn't do it either. As it turned out, that case was dismissed when the defense attorney discovered that the prosecutor had withheld evidence.

The way current laws read, this young kid would have been categorized for life as the same kind of monster as the grown man assaulting a 7 year old. Seems like some common sense needs to be injected.
