Spotlight on Sutton Place, Manhattan, NY!

Sutton Place DeFalco Realty

Sutton Place is a small, affluent section on the East Side of Manhattan. The area’s boundaries are from 53rd to 59th Streets, and the East River to Second Avenue. Known for it’s star-studded list of residents both current and former, Sutton Place is among the most exclusive areas in Manhattan. The long list of famous Sutton Placer’s includes Michael Jackson, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Aristotle Onassis, Lillian Gish, Consuelo Vanderbilt, and Freddie Mercury. Currently the official residence of the Secretary General of the United Nations is a five-story townhouse located in Sutton Place, originally built in 1921 by notable financier J.P. Morgan as a gift to his daughter.

Sutton Place was originally built in the 1800’s as part of Avenue A, whose purpose was to connect the previously unincorporated areas of the Upper East Side with a major thoroughfare. In the 1920s the area became very fashionable, when the second Mrs. William Vanderbuilt and Anne Morgan, wishing to get away from the opulence of Fifth Avenue, built townhouses overlooking the East River in what is now Sutton Place. This began a boom of luxury architecture in the area, with grand apartment houses popping up as developers tried to capitalize on the area’s sudden appeal.

Continuing in its elite tradition, Sutton Place is home to elegant condominiums and co-ops with breezy terraces and sweeping views of the East River. You can also find rows of historic townhouses, some of which sit on their own private driveway. Walk the quiet, tree-lined streets, or wander one of the many beautifully maintained pocket parks or communal gardens. The area is within walking distance of Midtown’s many office buildings, but set outside the noise and bustle of the area. Sutton Place is also close to the Museum of Modern Art, First Avenue’s many antique shops, and numerous prominent retail stores.
