This is a frequently asked question- whether I am in the supermarket, getting my car serviced or just having lunch in one of the local restaurants.  I could just say yes and leave it at that but I use the opportunity to explain why I am still doing real estate.

People enter a profession for various reasons. I am a Realtor because it is something I really want to do.  I point out to people that  unlike the dot com companies that faded away when the dot com bust occured real estate will continue to be with us just like death and taxes.  And why would I say that? Well, the market may go up and down but circumstances change and here are a few reasons why real estate will still be here:

  • People get married and need a place to live
  • A growing family means there is a need for a larger home
  • Seniors no longer needing the family house need to downsize
  • Strong economic growth in an area
  • The need to relocate
  • Divorce
  • Death

So, real estate will always be here.  I use the opportunity to also point out that consumers are still buying and selling and yes getting to closing is taking longer but there are still transactions occurring.  I also direct them to my blog because I provide monthly  real estate data for Dutchess county.

I also point out that it is more than just about a commission check. Yes there have been times when I worked on a project for a whole year and the project falls apart and I never get paid.  In which other profession would a person do that.  I also point out that now more than ever the consumer needs us.  Realtors can be a great resource for many undergoing financial problems and about to lose their home or investment.  We provide a listening ear and then connect them with other professional help.  At times we have actually babysat homes for clients who are out of town, many times with no additional compensation.  Many Realtors also work on projects to benefit the community.

So am I still doing real estate? You bet I am.

You go Jennifer! Darn right were still in Real Estate. For anyone who knows anything at all about Real Estate in the least will attest to the fact that up, down or sideways Real Estate will always over the long term put to shame everything else out there! I wish you and your family a healthy, happy and prosperous 2008. God Bless You. Thank You, Keith

Jennifer,

Real Estate is our profession, our craft and you sound like you love it just like we do.  Of course we are still in Real Estate, where else would we be?  You sound like you know exactly why and how, you sound successful and happy.  Every industry has ups and downs and the people who love their jobs don't jump ship because of a little slump!!!

You are right on, we just keep our heads up, and do daily what we love to do.

In a few words....Success is a Journey, Not a destination.

Jennifer, like you I enjoy my profession. I also realize that shelter will always remain one of the basic necessities. Individuals will either choose to rent or to own the dwelling. Regardless of their choice, as a Realtor, I can still assist them.

I love it when people ask if I'm still "doing" real estate, like it's cute little tihing I do to stay busy.  I remind them that it is my chosen profession and that I'll weather the bad and be ready for the good.

Keith -  To many of us this is not just a job, we actually enjoy helping others realise their dream of owning a home.  Thank you and I wish you much success also.

Gary and Cathy- I well know that other industries have ups and down, I should know I came from telecom.  Sounds like you have the right attitude.

Renae - Thank you, I think many are still confuse as to what we do.

Derrick - I know we share similar values about our profession.

Patrick - That is so true, there is alway opportunity in any market.  I too hope you business is doing well.

Christine - I think some people think it is just a pastime.  With recent development they can clearly see how real estate can impact the economy.

Patricia - I know this is a question posed to us very often so I took the opportunity to address our point of view.

Jennifer,

Great blog post! It is so true that no matter what, people will need a place to live! They might not move quite as much in a slow market, but they will eventually.

Jennifer, It frustrates me...I don't know why it seems to be a proffesion people expect us to leave. I want to say "do you still cut hair?", "are you still a teacher?" - why would I NOT be dong real estate? Oh yeah, the market conditions...in other words, are they really asking "have you failed?" In this market, I am so very proud to say "Yes, I am still doing real estate - and I am VERY busy, I am working so hard and I am closing transactions"!  Amen!

Jennifer ~ It is interesting that people ask that question. I think it has something to do with what's going on in the market. The strong will survive.

Great post Jennifer. All true points. Whether the market is up or down people will always need a place to live. We just have to adjust our game plans to fit the needs of the market.

Jennifer, you have turned a lemon into lemonade.  I don't get asked if I am still doing real estate but I am asked quite often how the market is doing.

Hi Jennifer,

Funny, sounds like a lot of us get the same question every now and then. Even after my first 20 years or so, people used to ask me the same thing. By now they know I'm a life-er and still loving it!

Real Estate is always in demand regardless of the market condition. Only the strong will survive. Thank you for writing this blog. This blog is another reason why I need to continue to work harder and most importantly smarter. Things are definitely rough but it will eventually get better. Trouble dont last always. Great post.

Jennifer, This is a terrific post and really stuck a nerve with so many people.  The realtors I know do it because they love it and will stick it out through the difficult times.  Wonderful way to express this.

Well stated Jennifer.  Great way to answer that troublesome question & reaffirm your committment to this industry.  We also get the "how's the market" question quite a lot.  And when I answer in a postive way, there is always stunned silence and then something like "well, that's not what I hear from all the other real estate agents."  Love your positive attitude.

Carol - I know you would be proud to be a Realtor. You are also making use of the opportunities in the existing market. Keep that momentum going!!!!

Monika - I suppose that is a question we will hear often these days.

Deb - You are right, can't allow anything to get us down.

George - I like the statement,"real estate profession is not a fad," we really get pleasure from helping others realise their RE dream.

Ray - Thank you, I do like to make a difference.

Darleen - I suppose many people think we a nuts to remain in real estate, the bad press did not help.  I think they don't know you can be sucessful in all types of market.

Eugene - You are so right there will always be a real estate need.

Jennifer -

Great blog and always talk about our business value.   I do have one disagreement with this "saying"!

I don't "do real estate".   I have a "real estate business" and the "real estate business is great". I just think it is more professional and gives us more value.

I try to instill this in the new folks at 4-4-3 when we discuss business mindset.
