The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be. –Ralph Waldo Emerson
Its funny how in the quiet hours our thoughts can wander through a million things. It is usually the simple things that provide us with the greatest epiphanies. My latest is so simple it only took me half a century realize it.
Life isn’t about what you have or what you get but what you give. My mother was the "family rememberer". She would remember people and their special days. Birthdays and anniversaries never went by without the perfect little card or gift. This wasn't just for family members it was practically everyone she had ever met. She had a way of letting people know that they had value in her eyes and should know it. Now despite growing up having to write those thank you notes after every holiday, we have to put it in the "Mama tried" category. I am not good at it! I've actually only met a handful of people that have this heart warming trait and they had one thing in common... They had a calendar and they knew how to use it. Isn't it nice to be remembered!
I always wanted to be one of those agents that could remember to reach out to someone that bought a house from me last year or 5 years ago or 10. Just assembling the information seemed like a huge undertaking and I always put it off. It really hit home recently when 4 houses that I sold to great clients were now on the market by another agent. That tells me I definately dropped the ball somewhere. (What was that agents name? It has been so long, I just can't remember it)
Well this week the light bulb finally went on. I pulled up my google calendar that I use for appointments and SOI notes and started putting in the closing dates of my past sales. Each one with the address that I sold, their names, emails phone numbers and mailing addresses. I color coded each one with purple and I then set it to alert me with an email and a pop up for each one.
So far I have 120 of my past sales lined up and have made contact with 9 of them that had an anniversary the last few days. It was like old home week although I did find a few of the babies were now graduating high school. I also got a very visual accounting of the months with most and least closings. I even found that one of the properties I closed this year was on the exact date I had sold his sisters property next door 2 years earlier.
Sometimes just figuring out a system that you can use and keep up with is half the battle. No matter what I do from this day forward I will have at least 120 reminders each and ever year that I should be reaching out to these past clients who put their faith in me and fed my family. Grab your calendars and see if it works for you!
