How To Get Your Fireplace Ready For Winter Weather – Winter is coming! The simple thought in your head of bundling up by a warm fire during the cold months will soon become a reality. There are a number of things you need to do to ensure that your fireplaces is ready to handle the heat. Here are five tips to help you get your fireplace ready for winter weather.

Exterior

Visually check out your chimney from the outside to make sure it isn’t damaged or leaning a certain way. Look for corrosion, stains, or anything that might need to be repaired before you start using it again.

Clean It

This isn’t always a DIY project, but you can use your own judgment based on your knowledge of proper fireplace and chimney cleaning. Consider hiring a professional to make sure your fireplace is in good, clean shape for winter.

Be Prepared

Go for the right kind of burn and be prepared with the best wood (if you have a wood-burning fireplace). Softwoods such as pine and fir tend to spark excessively, creating a potential fire hazard. Choose hardwoods instead, such as oak and cherry, and make sure the wood is dry.

Replace Batteries

If your fireplaces is a gas-burning fireplace, be sure to replace the batteries in any optional remote transmitters. There is nothing worse than wanting to turn on your fire, but not having any batteries on hand for the remote.

Test Smoke Detectors

Whether you have a gas or wood burning fireplace, you’ll want to double check all of the smoke detectors in your home. Remember, safety first – while fireplaces are wonderful in the winter months, you want to handle all of the safety precautions before getting them started.

Pine also clogs your chimney quickly as well.  We only burn it in our outside fire pit, never inside in the fireplace.  We used ours for the first time last night.

In my case, I would have to remember to open the flue because I have a gas fireplace :)

Rita, it should be checked out and cleaned by a licensed chimney sweep before burning anything!

Rita Boswell I was getting ready to give a "flip" response because we have a gas fireplace - until I read "If your fireplaces is a gas-burning fireplace, be sure to replace the batteries in any optional remote transmitters. There is nothing worse than wanting to turn on your fire, but not having any batteries on hand for the remote."  Agreed - and thanks for the reminder!
