Proposal to Require Notaries Public to be a U.S. Citizen Passed The Senate

There is a bill before the Tennessee State Senate to require a person to be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident before becoming a notary public. The measure is sponsored by Republican Senator Bill Ketron, Tennessee State Senate 13th District.  It unanimously passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.  A similar version unanimously passed the House last month.

Thank you for sharing.  I was thinking as I read your post.  How many states do not require U.S. Citizenship?  It seems to me this would have already been a requirement.

I don't know if Michigan requires it but I will find out. You would think they would, but now I'm thinking about it.

With the Patriot act and other homeland security issues...this seems like a no-brainer!

If a person is not a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident prior to becoming a notary, it is the most unethical thing I have heard in a long time..I will check Pa statues...

In Calif you have to be a citizen if you are a notary on a military base.

Everyone else has to a legal resident.

In N.J. citizenship is not required.

I don't see any interest in our California legislator body to pass a law like this.
