Visiting Boca Grande, Florida

Florida is considered the Fishing Capital of the World and the waters around Boca Grande is Florida's Fishing Capital. Soooo, Boca Grande must be Ground Zero for fishing. Known for outstanding fishing year round and most predominantly for Tarpon fishing, Boca Grande is a heck of a place to visit.

This picture shows a little bit of the blue-green, but actually nothing close to what it looked like in person.

The beaches are sugar white and the water around Boca Grande is to die for. This is the only place in the Continental United States that has the aqua blue-green waters like the Caribbean. I've lived in Florida for over 4 years and have travelled all over the state for 20 years previous to moving here and have seen some pretty tropical waters around the state, BUT NOTHING like the water I saw today at Boca Grande.

Many of you may recogize the name, Boca Grande, because the Bush family spends alot of time here vacationing. This started many years ago and George along with GW and their families come here to unwind and relax. When they are here, the locals don't other them, which allows them to have a true vacation.

The light house to the left was the original light which has been replaced and can be located at one of the state parks on the Island.

This light house was replaced with a newer light house down on the southern point, which is shown below.

Another bit of information about Boca Grande is that it has been over-run with Iguanas. These lizards are originally from Mexico & Central America, but years ago people let some of these lizards lose and now they run the island. When we stopped to take the picture of the older light house above, next to the car was this young brown colored Iguana.

A very nice feature that I liked about Boca grande is that it is not over developed, nor do you see any high rises or franchises on the island. I imagine it is still as it was 25 to 30 years ago. Very quaint and most of the locals use Golf Carts to move about the island.

Even though you have to get to Boca Grande via Charlotte County, Boca Grande is actually in Lee County like Ft. Myers, Sanibel, and Captiva.

Next time you are in Southwest Florida, make a point to visit Boca Grande, I'm sure you will enjoy it.
