I'm amazed at how many times I see a complaint posted on AR where the "poster" complains that the author of a particular blog uses words that they consider to be "big".

Big, I suspect what they mean by that is that they are words used which they do not understand.

Now, that being said, If you are working on a computer, there is such a thing as google, webster's dictionary on line, or just having a dictionary in your home.  Look it up.  I mean, if it's a word that you don't know what they mean, look the word up. Learning a new word of the true definition of a new word every day is a good thing.

Criticizing an author of a blog for using intelligence while posting is not a bad thing.

I think using intelligent vocabulary and writing succinctly is great!

How do you feel about this? Every blog reflects a person's personal writing style...and it should...shouldn't it?

By the way - why is "blog" and "google" not in the AR dictionary as words?

Karen, I agree with you 1000% percent.  As someone who is always striving to improve my vocabulary, I can't believe that someone would fault someone else for sounding intelligent!?  Whenever I see a word in a book or a magazine that I am not familiar with, I mark it and go back to it later just to find the meaning.  Dictionary.com is a great tool.

I had a professor at Purdue that rode me pretty hard when he found out that I would read a book without having a dictionary with me to look up words that I did not that I came across in the book.

Lisa,

Thank you, call me crazy, but I have a dictionary right next to my chair where I sit and work on my lap top.  Even with the AR spell checker, sometimes I look it up in Websters as well...if not for the spelling, perhap's it's a word I don't know for the definition.

When I worked in the medical field and I was "on-call" I used to do cross word puzzles while I was waiting for the patient's to get to my department....That is a great way to enhance your vocabulary!

Bloggers should write in a style that goes with who they are.  You should not use "big" words just to appear more intelligent nor should you purposely talk down to your audience.  The words that you use should be appropriate to your post as well.

Okay, I was afraid of sounding a little too neurotic, but what the heck, we're amongst friends...I read about 50 books per year.  I keep a sheet of 'sticky dots', sort of like very miniature post it notes, inside the book jacket at all times.  Whenever I see a new word that I want the definition of, I stick a dot there so I don't have to look it up right away.  When I finish the book, I scan through and look for pages with the dots on them so that I can look them all up at once.  The 'sticky dots' are great because you can pull them off the page without permanently marking the book.

They are called Avery 05796: Round See Through Removable Color Dots and you can get them at Staples and other office stores.

HHHMmmmm, I've never seen words or vocabulary being referred to as "big" before, maybe the posted was a bit illiterate or had a poor education. Kind of Odd!!

Sean,

I have read that comment more than a few times and again tonight which is what precipitated my post.

Tom,

You can also google websters.  I have a dictionary next to my chair where I sit and blog...No word is beyond me looking it up if I don't already know what it means...

I wonder what my SAT score would be after 35 years???? LOL!

Pam,

I don't purposely use words that I don't use on a regular basis when I post a blog...It's just the way I speak. Au naturale!

Lisa,

You are so funny...I use those for my contracts, and highlight where the customer need's to sign, so I don't miss a line...then again, hard for them to miss one either. Thank you for posting!

That's so sad that people would even admit to not knowing big words!  I enjoy the challenge and looking things up
