I have spent a very satifisfying six consecutive Sunday evenings watching HBO's miniseries John Adams. I must admit that as a student, I was very found of our country's revolutionary history, as well as those of our founding fathers. But as an adult, I have been inspired again!
Paul Giamatti is an incredible actor. Laura Linney, his equal in the task of portraying a great American couple. The series lead viewers through a life of public service on the part of John Adams and his family, the birth of a nation, the beginning of a two party political system, and a friendship that lasted through it all.
Following John Adams through the beginning of our Revolution, you begin to see the friendship between he and Thomas Jefferson take hold. As Virginia was the first to come to the aid of Masschusetts in fighting the British, I was quite proud of my statesmen George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in the leadership and friendship they showed in the dawning hours of Nation.
I was so riled up after each installment of this series that I found myself humming the theme song and doing further investigation into the lives of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. I plan my very first trip to Monticello in Charlottesville this Spring. I love forward to viewing, with a new appreciation, the very history that has always been in my midst.
They say that history does repeat, and I'm sure it is not without forethought that some of the freedom of speech vs. patriotism issues, political party wars, and so on were featured as part of this historical drama. All I can say is, no matter what your political views, John Adams is worth investing the time. If for no other reason, you will walk away with a new appeciation for the sacrifice these men gave to our Country.

Isn't it wonderful to think about what must have been going through their minds as all of the events unfolded? Would ANY of us had the courage to do the things they did? I wonder.....
