I have spent a very satifisfying six consecutive Sunday evenings watching HBO's miniseries John Adams.  I must admit that as a student, I was very found of our country's revolutionary history, as well as those of our founding fathers.  But as an adult, I have been inspired again!

Paul Giamatti is an incredible actor.  Laura Linney, his equal in the task of portraying a great American couple.  The series lead viewers through a life of public service on the part of John Adams and his family, the birth of a nation, the beginning of a two party political system, and a friendship that lasted through it all.

Following John Adams through the beginning of our Revolution, you begin to see the friendship between he and Thomas Jefferson take hold.  As Virginia was the first to come to the aid of Masschusetts in fighting the British, I was quite proud of my statesmen George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in the leadership and friendship they showed in the dawning hours of Nation.

I was so riled up after each installment of this series that I found myself humming the theme song and doing further investigation into the lives of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.  I plan my very first trip to Monticello in Charlottesville this Spring.  I love forward to viewing, with a new appreciation, the very history that has always been in my midst.

They say that history does repeat, and I'm sure it is not without forethought that some of the freedom of speech vs. patriotism issues, political party wars, and so on were featured as part of this historical drama.  All I can say is, no matter what your political views, John Adams is worth investing the time.  If for no other reason, you will walk away with a new appeciation for the sacrifice these men gave to our Country.

Isn't it wonderful to think about what must have been going through their minds as all of the events unfolded?  Would ANY of us had the courage to do the things they did?  I wonder.....

I have missed the start of it but I thought this was going to be a great role for a great actor in Paul Giamatti.  I guess I'll have to catch it on DVD!

Jim: What they did is immeasurable.  Certainly the sacrifices wouldn't be as great in a modern world.  This man spent years from his family while out of state and overseas.  He didn't have pictures or phone calls to communicate.  In fact, he was portrayed as not recognizing his own children when he returned from Europe to America after his ambassadorship was over.  I just hope that our citizens can renew their faith in this government and get it working the way it was intended, to serve the people.

Ron:  Paul Giamatti never disappoints.  As a former radio industry geek, I absolutely LOVED his role in Private Parts as Howard Stern's program director.

I recently had a discussion with my doctor about the mini series. He didn't have cable but had read the recent book on John Adams! I think I will try to find it an read it myself. He said it was very good and had some very interesting comments about the medical history of the time period as well.

Where are the patriots today? Obama? Hillary? McCain? I don't think so! What an eye opener that mini series was!

I appreciate your post...after you see Montecello come down and tour the Plantations on the James River too! We have so much cool history in Virginia!

Bill:  I must agree.  I look at our choice of leaders and see no inspiration.  How can we expect to be inspired when government is pandering to big business and lobbying groups.  We need a mini-revolution.  Stop voting for all incumbents.  Let them get the hint that unless they serve the PEOPLE, they will be out on their butts after their first term.

I saw the poster at the post office and I thought this was a movie - I'm sorry I missed it!  I will definitely check out the DVD's when they come to Blockbuster.

Hi Chris. I wanted to catch this mini series (I'm a bit of a history buff). Do you know if it will be playing again?

Vincent:  If I can judge by the replaying of everything else that HBO does, I'm sure it will be playing again.   I'd check HBO's website to see the schedule.

If the "founding fathers" were alive today and could witness what's going on, they'd never be able to stop throwing up.

My favorite line was in one of the eariler episodes where John Adams had just made the entire First Continental Congress angry in effort to raise support for defending Boston. He was sitting at a table with Ben Franklin and Adams asked Franklin what his opinion was and Franklin said "my opinion is that I have no opinion" then Franklin suggested that they go speak to Jefferson because Jefferson held the same views as Adams and Franklin said "maybe then I will find my opinion"!

Franklin would have made a great Realtor!

Bill:  I remember that.  So many great moments in that show.  Really brought history to life.
