Building My Outside Blog... the "back story..."

Note:  This post is sort of the "back story" to a post I wrote earlier today.  I could tell from some of the first few comments that were made... that the post was not making much sense to some.  So... this post is offered as sort of an explanation of the back story of what has happened over the past four months... that led me to write the post just two posts before this one titled...  Bowling For Tomatoes .  Please read this first, then read the "Bowling" post.  It will make more sense.  Thanks for your patience.

                    ~                    ~                    ~                    ~                    ~

I have been a member of Active Rain since August 21, 2007.  I had been blogging, posting, making comments, and just nosing around... reading everything I could about my new "find."  I found it all very interesting, although I must admit I really did not know what I was doing.

And then... about six weeks into my blogging on Active Rain, it started to become obvious to me that if blogging was going to make a real impact on my real estate business, sooner or later I was going to have to get an "outside blog."

An "outside blog" is a free-standing internet site... similar in a way to a website, but different in that the typical real estate website is "static"... and outside blogs are much more interactive between the public, my clients and future clients... and myself.

So... what to do ?  Where do I find out some answers ?  I decided to do what some of the contestants did when using one of the "lifelines" on the TV show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire."  I decded to "ask the audience."

The audience, of course, was everyone on Active Rain.  So... on October 7, 2007 I wrote a post titled Who Should I Choose... for my "Outside Blog....?" .  This post turned out to be my first "featured" post.  I was also totally blown away by the number of comments my post received... 76 comments.  Nothing I had written before  came anywhere close to getting that much of a response.

I learned so very much from all the comments and responses.  After reading all of them two or three times, and researching many of the ideas offered in the comments, I finally decided on using "The Real Estate Tomato" as my outside blog.

The next thing I did... was email Jim Cronin at The Real Estate Tomato- .  I think I received a return call the very next day.  That surprised me.  Yikes... someone who actually returns phone calls !  We talked, we emailed.  Jim emailed me lots of stuff to read, and finally I decided to go ahead and get started.

Jim sent me a series of emails detailing all I needed to do to get started in putting together my outside blog, and also a series of "preparation" emails on all the things I needed to do... to choose...  to decide on... in getting started.

I must admit... I am not a techie.  Not at all.  I can type.  I can write posts.  I can even read and spell.  But my poor little introverted intuitive touchy-feely brain was just not prepared for all of this.

So... what did I do ?  I pretty much panicked.  What else would a touchy-feely introverted older chick do when faced with this seemingly endless mountain of techno-google stuff that I did not understand.

I called the whole thing to a halt.  I just stopped it.  I told myself I wasn't ready to do this.  I told myself it looked like it was too painful a process to go through.

Four months have gone by since I chickened-out.  But I am back !

What, you might ask, has changed ?  Well... plainly and simply... I have finally come to the conclusion that in order for me to take my business to a level where I feel I am making progress and moving forward... after being in real estate for over twenty years... I simply felt that not going through this process... and letting my business stay where it is... was even more painful .

My two choices were 1) painful... and 2) more painful.  It reminds me of the famous Anais Nin quote...

"Then came the day... when the risk of remaining tight in a bud... became more painful than the risk it took to blossom."

So... I have chosen to finally start the process.  Here is a link to my post about getting started... called Bowling For Tomatoes .

Cyndee:  Thanks for your faith in me.  I just posted lots of questions for you in my response to your comment on Bowling For Tomatoes .  Yeah... I can just picture me "in full bloom."  What an absolutely scary thought.  Yikes.

Hey Cyndee, sometimes it isn't easy to get outside the box, I am happy to see you have done just that! I just might look into an outside blog after reading your great message!

Karen - you crack me up - I was pretty fortunate I am finding - you see 4 years ago when my website was set up my webmaster said.... thesa you think way too far ahead than any of my other clients - I think you will like a blog - so he put one on my site... I did not take it seriously - then I found AR - by the way he told me about AR - he had not joined - so I did without an invite - and later invited him... funny thing is my blog and my AR has gained me so much business - and my webmaster - well he still is not blogging - I will head out and check your link

Jean:  I have dreaded the pain of going through it all... but I think if done correctly, the business rewards will be there.

04/20/2008 11:55 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Thesa:  Ahhh... you are indeed ahead of the curve.  But, then again, in your own special way, you probably always have been.  Your webmaster was indeed your knight in shining armor.

And Thesa... I would love for you to give me a list of things you might do differently if you were to start over, and also things you did that really worked out well, and finally any other suggestions you might have as I struggle through this design, education and tutorial program.  Take care...

Karen Anne - Keep us updated on how things go with the Tomato.  I've heard a lot of great things about them and their platform.  As soon as I can get a few things cleared off my desk I'm going to jump on the outside blog platform with a vengeance... or at least give it a whirl.

04/21/2008 02:33 AM by Fairbanks Real Estate Broker Jesse Clifton (Jesse & Kathy Clifton, REALTORS - 907.699.6024 - )

Karen-Anne, I was one who didn't get it, huh? I thought it was me. Thanks for making it plain and good luck with your new blog. Anything worth doing requires new skills and you will be fine.

Oh, I would love to sign up for tomato bowling!!! I have talked to Chris Daley several times but the monetary is causing me a hiccup! I know my day will come, but I feel sometimes like I'm spinning my wheels while I wait. :-) Good luck with it.

Press On Karen Anne....and I am glad you did.  You strike me as a woman who does not let much stand in her wa.  I did pick up you were that more high touch than high tech.  Your blog will be memorable as you have a great flair for storytelling and writing.

Karen Anne, I'm entering the same process right now.  It's good to know that others are experiencing the same occasional doubts and obstacles!

Karen Anne, All you need to know to have a successful blog is how to write and a knowledge of Fort Worth real estate. SEO and page rank and all that tekie stuff automatically falls in place if you write good stuff. Content is King.

04/21/2008 10:12 AM by Mitchell Hall, Associate Broker, New York, NY (Coldwell Banker Previews International)

Jesse:  I will definitely keep posting updates as this voyage continues.  This time I need to just be brave and assume the good folks at The Tomato will find a way to teach me all I need to know.

04/21/2008 02:23 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Missy:  You mean you had a rough and tough time, too ?  I thought it was just me who was thick-headed.  Maybe it was drinking that Great Lakes water while we were growing up that made our sculls (at least, mine) so thick.  I appreciate your encouragement... and I promise, while I am talking with Chris during our sessions, that I will take the gum out of my mouth... LOL... so you won't have to yell at me.

I also have a Number1Experts website, just like you do.  It brings in some leads, but not as many as I need... so this Tomato blog will need to pick up that slack... and more.

04/21/2008 02:28 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Lindsey:  I talked with both Chris Daley and Jim Cronin quite a bit last December, but got spooked by all of the techie stuff.  I was simply drenched by it... inundated... my poor non-techie brain was on overload, and I panicked, and stopped the whole process.

Unfortunately I have not grown the techie part of my brain since then, but have vowed to press onward and hope they can deal with me, and be patient as I try and learn the process.  Obviously, money is a great big part of it, and I probably cannot afford it, either.  But, then again, the price for not doing it is probably even more expensive, if that makes sense.

And yes, I have felt that I have been spinning my wheels between last December and now... April 21st.  Four months of "wasted" time.  Well, mebbe not totally wasted, but I sure could have made better use of it if some of the time I have spent on Active Rain had also been funnelled into my Tomato outside blog... if I had one... LOL.  Am I making any sense here, Lindsey ?  I will try to be more brave this time, mostly because I need to.  Take care...

04/21/2008 02:34 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Pam:  I'm pressing, I'm pressing, but nothing happens.  :)

Thank you for your kind words, but this time... I let my fear get in my way.  I got spooked by all that techie stuff.  I felt... never in a million years will I be abe to learn all that stuff.  But... Chris and Jim have said... early on... that their techie classes will prepare me well... so all I can do is simply believe them... blind faith... and press onward.  Cross your fingers and toes for me.

Yes... much more high touchie-feelie than high-tech.  And yes, I don't write all that badly... LOL.  What really surprises me is that quite a few of the folks that have gone through this process and actually put up really good-looking blog sites... made just a few posts... and then have just let the thing sit... for months at a time... making perhaps one post every six of eight weeks... if that.  It amazes me.  Perhaps they were all techie and no intuitive-imagination-touchie-feely to go forward after all the techie stuff was done.  I dunno.

04/21/2008 02:40 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Eric:  So you are going to go through this with the Tomato, too... huh ?  This might sound like I am asking you if you are pregnant, but... "how far along are you ?"  LOL.  Hmmm... "occasional" doubts and obstacles ?  Yeah... very, very occasional.  My doubts are more about just putting it together and learning how to work all those gizmos, widgets, "slugs" as Cyndee calls them, back links, front links, whatever links.  I have no clue what any of that means... let alone what to do with it/them.

I tried to call you at both of your offices, but all I got was voice mail.  I did not leave a message, but my number is prolly on your office caller ID.  I thought that if we put our heads together and compares notes on this, it might help.  Take care... let's talk soon... :)

04/21/2008 02:46 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Mitchell:  I almost agree with you about content.  Content is Queen, my friend.  It's the Queen who holds the power.  Ask Bill Clinton... LOL.  Well... I do know how to write, and I have great knowledge about both Fort Worth and about real estate.  And... I spent nine years as a junior high school teacher before getting into real estate.

I have been plugging away at Active Rain since August 21, 2007... and not much of the techie stuff has sunk in.  I don't even know how to insert a "subscribe to my blog" button into my posts.  It took me eight weeks to finally learn how to put pictures into my posts, and another three months to figure out how to do it in such a way as to be able to wrap text around those pictures.  I got A's and B's in Psych, Philosophy and French in college, but struggled mightily in Calculus and Physics.  That stuff just did not sink in.

So... we shall see.  I have started this up again... and this time... I cannot afford to panic and stop.  I need to do this.  So... I will report on my progress in posts to come.  Take care...

Outside the box is one of the few ways to survive this market.

04/21/2008 06:31 PM by Sandra Carlisle, Realtor - Newport Beach - Corona del Mar (First Team Estates)

Wow Karen, good for you!  You are brave to try something new....and if older agents don't adapt, they will get extinct!  I admire your step into an outside blog!  Keep up the great work!

04/21/2008 07:28 PM by Edward W. Lui - Georgetown Texas Real Estate (Lone Star Properties)

Sandra:  I agree.  Creativity and inventiveness are our friends.  I think standing still is being stagnant.  That will not work in this market.  Take care...

04/21/2008 11:19 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Edward:  Thank you so much for your kind words.  I think an outside blog, if done well, and if worked at and nursed, can be a major help in establishing an identity in this market.  But... it must be worked... and worked consistently... not just a post every week or so.  It is a true commitment.   Also... if I see any "older" agents... I will pass along your advice... LOL.

04/21/2008 11:23 PM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Yep, we gotta keep on trying new things - and there is always something to write about. Don't stop learning! Carla

04/24/2008 12:14 AM by Carla Harbert - RE/MAX Pros (Full Time REALTOR in Ohio)

Carla:  There are so many new things that keep appearing on he real estate horizon.  I think it is incumbent upon us to at least try and understand what these new advances (?) are... and then adapt and adopt those which we feel we can both handle, and that can be to our advantage.  Thanks for your support.  Take care...

Thank, for the information, and there is always something to learn.

Karen - Several articles I've read say that people are more motivated by avoiding pain (or, more pain) than by seeking pleasure.

04/25/2008 08:39 PM by Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS (RE/MAX Metro)

Thank you Karen for sharing this story! I purchased a TypePad blog in January of 2007! Then renewed it in January of 2008 -- I've done nothing with it! I've learned so much from Active Rain, I've been thinking I might be ready to take the next step, but I'm just not sure!

I can't wait to read your new blog. I think you'll inspire more of us to do the same.

04/25/2008 10:50 PM by Debbie DiFonzo, United Country VIP Realty, SW Missouri

Olga:  My pleasure.  I am glad you found some of this information useful.  Take care...

04/26/2008 01:24 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Sharon:  I totally agree.  Maintaining yourself free from pain... sure... avoiding pain is a great moitvator.  It reminds me of one of my favorite Anais Nin quotes... "then came the day, when the risk of remaining tight in a bud... became more painful than the risk it took to blossom."  Even when there is so much to gain by doing something... avoiding pain can become the prime motivator.  Thanks for sharing your idea with us.  Take care...

04/26/2008 01:27 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Debbie:  You are very welcome.  To make you not feel so bad, there are some who have bought and paid a lot of money to get a Real Estate Tomato blog, and then made just a few posts, and then pretty much abandoned it.  What an incredible waste.  That was one of the things I guess that caused me to hesitate, too.  But... this really is something that needs to be done.

I have seen many outside blogs that have been started up, and then just sat there.  I am afraid that I concentrated on that... and allowed that to induce self-doubt, rather than focus on all the progress and great results gained by those who started their outside blogs, and then reaped great rewards.

Debbie... you already have your TypePad blog bought... be brave... jump right in... call or email me if I can provide some cheerleading.  Take care...

Karen, now I am getting the rest of your story!  Putting the pieces together.
