Everything I Learned About Real Estate I Learned in Kindergarten

Advice For Newbies

Really.  Hmm.  Maybe so.  Let’s look back at those basics:

Sharing.

As in information sharing.  Well, there are some who say share nothing - yeah, some of us who have been in business for a while have heard this "advice" but I believe sharing is good.  Very good.  Please share.  Ask others.  Over time, you'll find you will learn even more when you share. Seek out those who share.

Playing fair.

There will be those who don’t.   I say karma.  It’s a bitch.  And that’s a good thing. You’ll find out.   Sooner.  Or later.   Perhaps more than once.  Don’t be a statistic of that category. And watch that bitch. This is a winning strategy.

Don’t hit people.

Yeah, that can be a bitch too.  But it’s best to be a good person.  For you. For the world.  Really.

Put things back where you found them.

Keys in lockboxes come in mind.  Yeah, and those rogue clients too. Keeping things in order will help you win in this business. People like that. So will you.

Clean up your own mess.

You screw up, take ownership.  Enough said.   Rinse.  Repeat.

Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

Stuff happens.  Be mindful.  It’s that karma thing again.  Really.

Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.

Yeah, that’s a hard one but you know it makes a difference.  You’ll feel better.  The sandbox will be a better place too.

Wash your hands before you eat.

Your competition...okay, that’s a bit snarky...but hey, it’s my kindergarten class...so my rules...so there.

Flush

Yikes!  Need we address this one?  Again…

Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

Well, the aroma of warm cookies certainly are enticing.  But the most successful of open house events have proper preparation, presentation and pricing in order - yeah, cookies are nice but those three P’s  make a bigger difference.

Live a balanced life.

Here!  Here!

Take a nap every afternoon.

Well, getting enough sleep is never bad.  Beware -- not wise during a listing presentation.

Watch for traffic. Hold hands.

We can achieve so much by working together.

Be in awe of wonder.

The possibilities are endless.  Really.

You can make it happen in real estate.

Remember the basics. Go forth. Prosper.

No doubt about it!  What we learn in our early years follows through in our adult life and business.  Like many before me, I did not go to Kindergarten, but learned these basics at home - but the outcome is the same.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  It's the Golden Rule personified.

Thanks for this great post. Definitely deserved a Feature!

I wish I could go back to Kindergarten so I can break all these rules and the worst that could happen is my mom gets a call.

LOL at 'take a nap every afternoon'.  That is a luxury for me but sometimes I do--makes a big difference in my energy level the rest of the day!

Patricia Kennedy brought me here;

I was nodding yes to every one of your rules.  (and the washroom etiquette is even more important for the boys in that room).

What I don't understand, if we all follow those rules, as I know they do in kindergarten, why is there still so much drama.  Someone surely isn't following, though thank goodness for karma.

This brings to mind the show " are you smarter than a fifth grader?"  Only this has you asking us are we smarter than four year olds? In many cases  no way.  The clean up your own mess is HUGE and no one much seems to remember that rule.
