That title was just to get your attention, but Star Trek does relate to my subject in this blog.
The November "Show Us Your Wallpaper" contest is a challenge for me because I have to choose just one. I'm the family techie so I've set the wallpaper on our three computers, two smart phones and a tablet. I like variety so they each have a different theme. For this contest I decided to pick my favorite.
The Cigar Galaxy (Messiers 82) shown here is just one image from a slide show of NASA's Spacescapes. When I started college my passion was astrophysics, and if I ever retire I'll probably pick it up again as a hobby. Meanwhile I enjoy the amazing images we get from Hubble and other sources and do my best to keep up with current discoveries and the ever-changing theories in the field of particle physics.
Why does space fascinate me so much? As a child I remember looking out the window next to my bed at night and feeling the vastness of our universe, something that has always inspired me and given me perspective about this jewel-of-a-planet we call "home". Having my screen-saver constantly reminding me of the wonders of life and space is uplifting and that's a good feeling to experience repeatedly throughout my normal work day.
