Jack

What Do I Miss About Jack?

It’s been a week ago today that my 16 year old dog, Jack, passed on. As I got out of bed today and opened the bedroom door my first thought was don’t step on Jack. Jack often slept near the door and many a time in my sleepy haze I’d stumble over him or step right on him.

Next of course always came putting him out to do his business. This always took place immediately after exiting my nice warm bed, wearing nothing but a rob, and opening that back door with temperatures as cold as 30 degrees below zero. Of course in the year or two Jack was no eager beaver to get out there and freeze his little thing off either.

Next was Jack at breakfast. I’m sure this will gross many of you out but after we were done eating Jack “pre-washed” the dishes before we put them in the dish washer. Amazing how a person can miss that but even the kids are having a hard time adjusting to the no pre-wash (or Jack cleaning up what they really didn’t want on their plates in the first place.

I especially miss fixing Jack breakfast which really amounted to me giving him 1/3 of a can of dog food in a cereal bowl. It gave me an opportunity to mock my Bride by bemoaning that I had so much to do and yet I had to slave away in the kitchen all morning to fix Jack a meal.

I miss coming home to find Jack waiting at the door until every member of the family was home for the day.

I miss finding Jack under foot every time I got up from a chair or a couch and I miss hearing my Bride complain about the same.

Jack did not have an exciting life and he didn’t make life exciting but I have to say, I miss Jack.

Bob - Jack took years to become part of the family.  I know the loss will continue to be felt.  That is what is hard about having dogs.

Jack was our 1st child...(not by birth of course) so he fit right in Grant Schneider and he had no trouble adopting Tina and Timmothy when they intruded into his home.

You are wrong Bob, Jack did have an exciting life.  He had a family to love and take care of. He was needed.

He was needed and loved although a little under appreciated Evelyn Johnston .  When you talk about him being excited you should have seen that old boy when I made breakfast for him.

It is so difficult when we lose our pets, they are just like our kids.   Jack sure looks like he was a great pup and companion!

I'm so sorry.  Our pets fill a special place in our hearts and we sometimes don't realize until they are gone how much their absence hurts.  You can never replace Jack, but you can always give another pet a chance to experience a loving life with your family.

Belinda Spillman I've had my own dog since I was 18 but I think I will take a break till at least next spring. It's hard to train a little puppy when it's 30 below zero.

Good afternoon Bob,

I think Jack slept there so he would be reminded to get up and have you wait on him hand and foot.

If you are like us there will be another to take his place.

Make yourself a great day.

That's a strong possibility Raymond E. Camp being he would sleep so soundly he may miss us if we didn't trip over him.

Bob - Boy do I know how you feel. We lost our boxer Gracie just a few months ago, and I still expect to see her rushing up to greet me when I arrive home.

I certainly miss Jack Debbie Reynolds but as a 16 year old dog we were blessed to have him that long.

Hi Bob, just saw this post and my heart is breaking for you. I lost my beloved Gracie on October 6th to a massive stroke and was with her to her last breath. Still can't believe she's gone after being at my side for 14 years. Your post could have been written about my household right now. I would like to think that my Gracie and your Jack are frolicking together in doggie heaven right now.

Thanks Nina Hollander no doubt they are both enjoying God's presence as I believe all pets that are capable of loving, and do love, go to heaven. Thanks for sharing Gracie with us/me.
