What Do I Miss About Jack?
It’s been a week ago today that my 16 year old dog, Jack, passed on. As I got out of bed today and opened the bedroom door my first thought was don’t step on Jack. Jack often slept near the door and many a time in my sleepy haze I’d stumble over him or step right on him.
Next of course always came putting him out to do his business. This always took place immediately after exiting my nice warm bed, wearing nothing but a rob, and opening that back door with temperatures as cold as 30 degrees below zero. Of course in the year or two Jack was no eager beaver to get out there and freeze his little thing off either.
Next was Jack at breakfast. I’m sure this will gross many of you out but after we were done eating Jack “pre-washed” the dishes before we put them in the dish washer. Amazing how a person can miss that but even the kids are having a hard time adjusting to the no pre-wash (or Jack cleaning up what they really didn’t want on their plates in the first place.
I especially miss fixing Jack breakfast which really amounted to me giving him 1/3 of a can of dog food in a cereal bowl. It gave me an opportunity to mock my Bride by bemoaning that I had so much to do and yet I had to slave away in the kitchen all morning to fix Jack a meal.
I miss coming home to find Jack waiting at the door until every member of the family was home for the day.
I miss finding Jack under foot every time I got up from a chair or a couch and I miss hearing my Bride complain about the same.
Jack did not have an exciting life and he didn’t make life exciting but I have to say, I miss Jack.
