It's not everyday that we get to see a group of turkey vultures hanging out together, so we just had to stop to take a picture during this recent getaway. Usually I see them flying high or cleaning up road kill on the road side. Also during this back road trip we had a close encounter with one slow uplifting bird...we scraped its wing slightly as it flew back towards us as we passed in the car, disturbing it from its meal. Gosh such large birds up close and so needed in our eco-system. I am not surprised that they like to hang out on top of abandoned houses....fits their character image I'd say.
Good Friday morning Gloria Todor -
A great pic and I've learned a new name for Turkey Birds. My bride calls them "road kill birds" and I have never known what the real name is.

Good morning Doug. These birds are ugly and creepy and yet your picture is stunning.

Wow, that bird must have been flying pretty slowly for you to have scraped it. Probably was reluctant to leave its meal!

They have interesting names for groups of buzzards. One of them being a "wake." That's a wake, not awake!
[According to Wikipaedia]: A group of vultures is called a wake, committee, venue, kettle, or volt. The term kettle refers to vultures in flight, while committee, volt, and venue refer to vultures resting in trees. Wake is reserved for a group of vultures that are feeding.

Hi Gloria Todor
That was a great find and the house is lovely. Thanks for sharing and hope the fall is mild right now. I am planning to spend a week in Philadelphia this Christmas and not sure if I need snow boots or not. I certainly do not want to fall on the ice and break something. I will call you when I am there.

Thanks Roy Kelley for stopping by.
It would be nice to meet you and Dolores one day at Longwood. I will have to check in with you.
Thanks Myrl Jeffcoat for your Wikipedia info. I had found that wording "committee" on line and I alsow thought it was interesting how the buzzards had different names for different gatherings. Descriptions of gathering birds from a slower time in the world.
Thanks Kristin Hamilton CA Realtor . Thus far the weather has been mild. The Philly area has been spared freezing temps at night and I still have a few marigolds and forget me nots in my garden.
Please do contact me if your schedule permits. We could meet for a cup of tea/coffee! It would be wonderful to meet you!
In regards to snow at Christmas...it does happen but in most recent years we have not had a white Christmas. So chances are you may only feel the cold of winter.
Happy Thanksgiving my friend and I will call you when I arrive so hopefully we can set up a coffee get-together. Meeting with my friend Hannah Williams there too so maybe at the same time.

Kristin Hamilton CA Realtor They are the ugliest birds I have ever seen . I saw them one day in the middle of a city street and was shocked .It was the first and last time I have ever seen them .. Not surprised it is called a wake to see a group of them

I think they eat on dead critters and that is gross but so do ravens. The picture Gloria took is very eerie and reminds me of a Hitchcock movie.

Kristin Hamilton CA Realtor and Hannah Williams it would be nice to meet both of you during Kristin's visit east.
Yes those turkey vultures are creepy up close, with their bald heads. Yet they must find lots to eat even if on city roads or country roads.
Hope you both had a good Thanksgiving!
