When showing and selling homes, home size matters. South Florida homes with 1,200 square feet of space or less are considered 'small'. But now comes the Tiny Home, which is generally agreed to be any home that is 400 square feet or smaller or the size of a standard two car garage. Oftentimes, these tiny domiciles can also be placed on wheels and transported. For folks eager to downsize and curious about tiny home living, there are companies & dozens of tiny homeowners that offer their properties for daily rentals so that life in tiny quarters can be sampled.
Perhaps the biggest (no pun intended) conumdrum for the tiny home enthusiast may be where to put the dwelling. Zoning rules in many cities do not yet allow these properties. And, if they can be moved, will these homes have a fixed address? Families may also find these homes too tiny.
While the National Association of Realtors (NAR) notes that the share of Buyers that have purchased small homes (1,000 square feet or less) has stayed relatively stable at 1% during recent years, the allure of reduced housing costs & lower environmental impact could be enough to change minds & behavior in favor of tiny homes in the not-too-distant future.
