Open House Effectiveness

I have been doing everything from wine/cheese to just sticking signs in the yard and waiting. I am really not sure about the effectiveness of the open house. Are virtual tours the answer to this problem, or the text info tags the answer. Any input would be greatly appreciated, I am relatively new at the buyers side of real estate and love good information especially from pros.
